The Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University revealed on the 12th that after the hospital's re-examination, the world's first porcine islet transplant patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus had normal glycated hemoglobin, postprandial blood glucose and kidney function, and achieved complete detachment
    of exogenous insulin.
This is the world's first case of porcine islet xenografting to completely get rid of insulin in the treatment of diabetes, and xenoislet transplantation has made an important breakthrough
    .

The patient has a 23-year history of diabetes mellitus, and even with daily use of large amounts of exogenous insulin, he still develops uncontrolled glycemic metabolism, develops renal insufficiency uraemia, and requires frequent hemodialysis to stay alive
    .
In 2019, the patient underwent a kidney transplant, but because the diabetes was not controlled, the transplanted kidney was damaged
    three years later.

In November 2022, Wang Wei, professor of radiology at the Third Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, joined hands with the Department of Transplantation, Endocrinology and Nutrition to form a multidisciplinary consultation (MDT) team for islet transplantation, and designed a targeted transplant treatment plan
for patients on the basis of a large number of previous research data.
The core content of this program is the original innovative technical system of the team, including porcine islet extraction, a new anti-rejection program focusing on immune tolerance induction, minimally invasive surgical approach and monitoring plan for postoperative complications
    .

At the time of discharge, the patient's diabetes-related indicators were significantly improved, glycated hemoglobin returned to the normal range, from 9% before surgery to 5.
4% normal, and the total daily exogenous insulin was reduced by nearly half
    compared with preoperative time.
More importantly, the patient's transplanted kidney function returned to normal, which changed the damaging effect
of pre-transplantation diabetes on the transplanted kidney.

After two months of recovery after discharge, the efficacy of porcine islet transplantation in the treatment of diabetes was further manifested, and glycated hemoglobin, liver function, kidney function, and blood glucose detection were all maintained at normal levels
    .
The patient is currently in good mental condition, can perform daily work, and has achieved complete detachment
    of exogenous insulin.

It is reported that diabetes is a major chronic disease that seriously affects human health, and the number of diabetic patients in China has reached about 140 million
    .
Islet transplantation can cure diabetes, the extreme shortage of human-derived donors is the bottleneck limiting the application of this technology, and xenograft can effectively solve the donor shortage
