After a five-year research project, the European Union has announced that the world's first fastest all-lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) powered hovercraft (ASV) "BB Green" has been launched at the Latitude Yachts shipyard in Riga
, Latvia.
As the world's first fully battery-powered hovercraft, BB Green can reach speeds of up to 30 knots (56 km/h).
The ship, which can carry 70 passengers and bicycles, will initially be used for demonstration
across Europe.
This hovercraft technology will reduce water resistance
by running the vessel on an air cushion.
A battery-powered fan located at the bow injects compressed air into the air cushion below the boat while supporting approximately 80% of the ship's displacement
.
The 25-ton hovercraft is propelled by two 280 kW electric motors and can reach speeds of up to 30 knots, reducing drag by 40% at high
speeds.
Power hovercraft
BB Green is equipped with an energy storage system with a 200 kW/h LTO, enabling the ship to travel 14 nautical miles (26 km)
in 30 minutes.
Each time it is moored, the boat will receive 15-20 minutes of fast charging time
.
This would make BB Green the world's fastest electric commuter hovercraft, suitable as a waterway commuter boat
from the countryside to the city centre.
"BB Green" is a collaboration between 8 companies, SES Europe / Effect Ships Internationa (hull technology and design); Latvian Latitude Yachts shipyard (responsible for construction); Echandia Marine (for system integration); Leclanché, Switzerland (responsible for energy storage systems); The Swedish company SSPA is responsible for (tank inspection and documentation); Law's Register (safety and classification); The Swedish company Diab is responsible (Synthetic Materials and Engineering) and the Dutch company Aqualiner (end user partner).
The vessel will reduce local emissions and provide quiet and comfortable transport conditions
for inland waterway transport vessels.
The battery-powered hovercraft BB Green will be jointly owned by SES Europe and Green City Ferries, which will operate the ship's cruise from Riga to Stockholm, Sweden, via the canal to Gothenburg, Sweden and then to Oslo
, Norway.
