, Oct. 17 (Xinhua Yuan Yuan) U.S. and British researchers using laser measurements found that the world's tallest trees are much more weight than originally estimated, absorbing more carbon than originally estimated.
University College London and the University of Maryland in the United States used lasers to measure sequoia growing in northern California, the Times of London reported Thursday. Sequoia is the tallest tree species in the world. The researchers measured an old sequoia called Colonel Armstrong, which was 88 meters high and weighed 110 tons, up from an estimated 70 to 90 tons. Laser measurements are more accurate than previous measurement techniques.
researchers used lasers to measure weight for some of the world's largest trees, and the data were higher than previously estimated. Matt Disney, a professor at University College London, says that based on new data analysis, California's sequoia forests absorb 30 percent more carbon than originally estimated. Trees in the Earth's tropics absorb 10% more carbon than originally estimated.
researchers say more accurate measurements can increase the value of tall and old trees and make them better protected.
study is published in the latest issue of the British journal Nature Science Report.
