Recently, Chemical Weekly published the latest ranking of the World Chemical "$1 Billion Club" for 2016, based on the 2015 chemical sales revenue of the finalists. A total of 106 companies in this year's list have been shortlisted for chemical sales of more than US$3 billion, including 39 in the Americas, 33 in Europe, West Asia and Africa, and 34 in the Asia-Pacific region, including 6 in China, namely Sinopec, Taiwan Plastics Group, North Huajin Chemical, Hengyi Petrochemical, China Chemical Group and Wanhua Chemical.
BASF is back at the top of the list
BASF topped the list again with $59.3 billion in chemical sales in 2015, and last year's list was second to Sinopec, which had been at the top of the list for eight years in a row. Sinopec was second with $50.3 billion in chemical sales, and Dow Chemical was third with $48.8 billion in chemical sales. Exxon Mobil, Saudi Basic Industries and Taiwan Plastics ranked fourth to sixth with chemical sales of $40.7 billion, $36.6 billion and $36.2 billion, respectively. Mitsubishi Chemical of Japan ranks seventh with $29 billion in chemical sales, up three places from last year's ranking. IndyX ranks eighth with $28 billion in chemical sales, up one place from last year. Leandro Bassel ranked ninth with $26.2 billion in chemical sales, down two places from last year. DuPont ranked 10th with $25.1 billion in chemical sales, down two places from last year.
Sales revenue fell sharply but profits rose
56% of listed companies experienced a decline in chemical sales in dollar terms, mainly due to lower prices for most products in 2015 and some currency depreciation. In 2014, the top six companies generated more than $50 billion in chemical sales, but in 2015 only BASF and Sinopec exceeded $50 billion, and none of them generated more than $60 billion in chemical sales. Overall, the 106 companies on the list fell an average of 4 percent from the previous year to $10.8 billion, with the top companies seeing a bigger drop in chemical sales. Only Mitsubishi Chemical and Inglis increased their chemical sales revenues, and six fell 20% or more from the previous year.
, the profits of the listed companies increased in 2015. In this year's rankings, 74% of companies increased their profits in 2015, with chemical margins averaging 12.3%. The Largest chemical producers in the Americas are leading the way in profitability
There are 40 companies in the Americas this year, with an average chemical margin of 15%, the highest of any region. The average sales revenue of the top companies in the Americas in 2015 was $10.1 billion.
asia-pacific companies ranked on average only 7.8 per cent this year, significantly lower than in the Americas, Europe, West Asia and Africa. In addition, the Asia-Pacific region is smaller than other regions, with an average of $9.9 billion in sales revenue for the 35 companies on the list this year.
    uncertainty remains
poor business conditions have become the norm in the chemical industry, and 2015 is no exception and will continue in 2016. Kurt S. C. , chairman of BASF, said that the company's chairman, Mr "We are in the midst of the most turbulent period in decades, with an average oil price of $52 per barrel in 2015, half the price in 2014," Mr Bock said in a letter to shareholders in February. The sharp drop in oil prices is not only a sign of oversupply, but also of a slowdown in global economic growth, particularly in emerging economies".
slowdown in emerging economies is reflected in the list. Of this year's top 10, only Sinopec, Saudi Basic Industries and Taiwan Plastics are still in the top 10, although they are stable. Companies from other emerging economies have fallen sharply in this year's list, such as Brazil's Blasco, Thailand's PPT Global Chemical and the UAE's IPIC, all of which have fallen out of the top 20.
