French grid operator RTE said on Wednesday that France has enough generating capacity to meet its summer electricity needs
.
And, thanks to record output of nuclear reactors and solar power, France will remain a
net exporter of electricity.
France will have about 75,000 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity during this period, compared with peak demand of 55,000 megawatts, or up to 60,000 megawatts
in the event of a heat wave, RTE said.
RTE said electricity consumption could drop to 30,000 megawatts
around August 15 during the summer holidays.
"With the addition of 1,600 MW and 1,000 MW of inputs to wind and solar farms since last June, new records are expected for renewable generation, especially solar power, this summer," RTE said, adding, "Renewable energy will cover France's electricity consumption well above the 2018 average of 22.

" ”
Several nuclear power plants may have to reduce their output to comply with environmental regulations for the water used to cool the reactors, RTE said, adding that "nuclear power can be reduced by up to 6,000 megawatts
.
" ”
The 58 nuclear reactors operated by state-controlled utility EDF account for more than
75 percent of France's electricity demand.
