Iodine intake is associated with thyroid autoautosco
immunityA recent study published in thyroid disease, an authoritative journal of thyroid disease, looked at changes in thyroid autoimmune after 20 years of universal salt iodization (USI) in China78,470 participants (aged 18 or above) from 31 Chinese mainland provinces participated in the studyThe researchers measured the subjects' serum thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb), thyroid globulin antibodies (TgAb), TSH receptor antibodies (TRAb), thyroid stimulation hormone (TSH) and urine iodine concentration (UIC)researchers detected TPOAb and TgAb positives in 10.19 percent (95 percent CI 9.80 to 10.59 percent) and 9.70 percent (95 percent CI 9.28 percent to 10.13 percent) respectivelyThe prevalence of tPOAb (i-TPOAb), positive lysaofable TgAb (i-TgAb) and dual-positive TPOAb (d-Ab) was 4.52%, 4.16% and 5.94%, respectivelyThyroid antibody positive rates were highest in the iodine deficiency (UIC 100 ?g/L) groupThe prevalence of i-TPOAb is inversely proportional to excess iodine intake (MAI) and excess iodine intake (EI)The ratio of MAI (OR) is 0.89 (95% CI is 0.81-0.98) and the Ratio of EI is 0.90 (95% CI is 0.81-0.99)The researchers observed that, like i-TPOAb, i-TgAb was a high risk factor for lower TSH levels (OR-3.64, 95% CI was 2.62-5.05) and elevated TSH levels (OR-1.62, 95% CI was 1.49-1.77)In five ethnic groups, the incidence of thyroid positives variedafter 20 years of USI, the thyroid positive rate is still very lowMAI and EI are negatively correlated with TPOAb positives, which indicates that UIC from 100?g/L to 299?g/L is optimal and safe for thyroid autoimmuneThese conclusions need to be further confirmed in a follow-up study, as it is cross-sectional
