Scientists have developed a leafy, ultra-hydrophobic PTFE/CuO coating on 6061Al that can be manufactured quickly in two steps and protects the substrate from corrosion and contamination.
aluminum-based materials are widely used, but are susceptible to corrosion and contamination under certain harsh conditions. The preparation of moisture-proof coatings on aluminum-based materials is now a promising solution to these problems

. In a new work, a two-step approach has been developed to create a layered leafy ultra-hydrophobic PTFE/CuO coating on a 6061Al substrate that is simple, economical and environmentally friendly from the developer's point of view.
    rejects many liquids
the resulting coating resists many liquids such as tap water, ink, tea, milk, H 2 SO 4 solution (pH 3), NaOH solution (pH 10), glycol and glycerin. All contact angles of these liquids on the PTFE/CuO coating are greater than 150 degrees, while water slip angles are less than 10 degrees. Importantly, the results of self-cleaning, adhesion, chemical stability and corrosion resistance tests show that the PTFE/CuO coating protects the 6061Al substrate from corrosion and contamination. In addition, PTFE/ CuO samples are still ultra-hydrophobic after UV, thermal and mechanical stability testing, indicating that 6061Al substrates with PTFE/CuO coatings can be used under harsh conditions.
, according to scientists, this method is particularly suitable for large-scale industrial production and is expected to be used in corrosion protection and functional applications of aluminum-based materials.
the study was published in October 2020 in volume 147 of Organic Coatings Progress.
