The new crown pneumonia outbreak has had a negative impact on paraguay's many export industries, but some industries have weathered the impact of the outbreak, the banana industry is one of them.
according to statistics from the Single Window Certificate of Origin (VUE) of the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MIC), Paraguay's cumulative banana exports from January to October 2020 amounted to US$ 14.2951 million, an increase of 22 per cent year-on-year.
Hugo Franco, a representative of Paraguay's National Interdemental Committee on Banana Competitiveness, said there were three main reasons for the increase in banana exports in the first 10 months of the year, the first being a significant improvement in the quality of bananas in Paraguay, the second being a decline in banana production in parts of Brazil, followed by a sharp increase in demand for bananas in Argentina, which provided more room for Paraguayan banana exports.
also noted that Argentina is Paraguay's leading export market for bananas, which are expected to total more than $15 million by the end of 2020.
It is understood that Paraguay has an area of about 8,000 hectares of banana cultivation, with an average banana yield of 800 boxes per hectare, with Tembiapor?, Guayaibí and Cordillera being the main banana-producing regions.
