    and Japanese governments have reached an agreement to raise the trigger level of Japan’s safeguards for the beef
    industry and help meet Japan’s growing demand for U.

    Department of Agriculture also noted that the agreement would reduce the likelihood of higher tariffs on U.

      The agreement adds three triggers that Japan must meet to implement market safeguards and impose higher tariffs

      Trigger conditions include:
     
      Imports of  U.

    beef must exceed the original beef safeguard trigger level in the U.
    S.
    -Japan trade agreement;
     
      Total beef imports from the United States and original signatories to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for  Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) must exceed the safeguard requirements for CPTPP beef;
     
      ·  Beef imports from the U.

    must exceed the total amount of beef imported from the U.
    S.
    in the previous year

      Global sales of U.

    beef products reached $10 billion last year, making it the world's largest beef exporter

      After the deal was finalized, the United States Meat Exporters Federation (USMEF) issued a positive statement on the deal
