From SeafoodNews on March 8, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries Division has submitted a report to Congress to develop a species list under the Seafood Import Monitoring Program (SIMP)

SIMP is a screening and restriction tool used to identify IUU-caught fish and fish products and misreported seafood from entering the U.

The scheme uses "risk-based criteria to target species most vulnerable to IUU fishing and seafood fraud"

The report assesses the inclusion of existing species in SIMP and considers whether other species should be included in the program
.

SIMP has been implemented for about 3 years for all 13 species and species groups, including about 1100 species

As part of NOAA's comprehensive approach to combating IUU fishing and seafood fraud, the program is committed to continued development and enhancement of programs and regulations
