study published this week in nature-newsletter
suggests that changes in sleep activity in the brain's sensory cortical cortical layer are associated with visual enhancement.
although previous studies have suggested the effects of circadian rhythms on physiological processes, the neural basis for changes in the time points of human daily vision remains unclear. For the study, Christian Kell and colleagues at Goethe University in Germany scanned the brains of 14 men at six different points in time (between 8 a.m. and 11 p.m.). The authors collected not only so-called sleep state data (data collected when the subjects were not performing tasks), but also functional magnetic resonance imaging data when the subjects performed visual inspection tasks. The results showed that the subjects performed best in visual tasks at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. because the brain region that processes visual information had weak sleep activity at both points in time.
the authors argue that the human brain alters its natural activities to compensate for the deterioration of the quality of visual signals during morning sickness. This expected mechanism may explain why we can still have good vision in the morning. (Source: Science.com)
