A new WHO guideline recommends that adults and children should reduce their daily free sugar intake to less than 10% of their total energy intake
    .

A further reduction below 5% or about 25 grams (6 teaspoons) per day will have more health benefits

This recommendation is based on the latest scientific evidence analysis
    .

This evidence first shows that adults who consume less sugar have lower body weight, and secondly, there is an association between increased sugar content in the diet and weight gain

Reducing the intake of free sugars to less than 10% of the total daily energy intake was first recommended by the WHO research team in 1989, and was further elaborated in the 2002 WHO/FAO Expert Joint Consultation
    .

The updated WHO guidelines call for further reduction of free sugar intake to less than 5% of total energy intake where possible
