Why kill the same kind? Male and female "difficulties" are different |
Recently, Spanish researchers discovered that adult mammals have the ability to kill other individuals of the same species, but such behaviors in female and male mammals often seem to be for different reasons
.
The relevant research results were published in "Proceedings of the Royal Society, Series B" on July 21
Biologists have studied infanticide in mammals, that is, the behavior of adult animals killing minor individuals of the same species
.
But this is not the case for their killing of adult individuals of the same species
To find out whether there is a pattern in the killing, José María Gómez Reyes and his colleagues analyzed the causes of death of 1,384 mammals at the Arid Area Experimental Station of the National Research Council of Spain
.
Among these species, the research team found evidence of the death of 352 adult animals
.
This is especially common in ungulates, primates, and carnivores, but it is almost unheard of in bats, whales, dolphins, and rabbits
The research team found that male animals are more likely to kill the same species than females, and male animals are more likely to target other males than females
.
More importantly, male and female mammals usually have different motives for killing adult individuals of the same type
"We found the relationship between infanticide and adult female killing very interesting
.
" Gómez Reyes said
Male mammals are more likely to kill other adult males to get rid of competition, while female mammals are more likely to do this to protect their young from adult animals
.
However, when resources are scarce, female animals may also kill the young of other females
"The contribution of male animals to reproduction is really small.
They just produce sperm and mate as often as possible
.
Therefore, in my opinion, it makes sense for female elephants to kill other adult elephants in order to protect their babies from infanticide.
