According to the World Bank, Kenya may miss the goal of universal access to electricity next year, but is preparing to achieve it
by 2030.
While the country has made significant progress in connecting citizens to the grid and other off-grid power systems over the past decade, it may be too early
to achieve 100 percent nationwide connectivity by 2020, the World Bank said in a new report.
However, global lenders want the country to achieve this goal
by 2030.
The report also notes that Kenya has the highest rate of electricity access in East Africa, and the country is also far ahead of other countries
on the continent.
"Ghana and Kenya have been successful and are expected to achieve universal access to the grid by 2030, but progress in the region has been very uneven," the World Bank report revealed
.
The increase in electricity supply in Kenya is mainly due to the implementation of
last-mile connection projects.
Launched in 2015, the project aims to expand connectivity between rural and peri-urban areas through subsidized connections, spurring a surge
in the number of electricity consumers.
According to electricity distributor Kenya Power, the coverage of electricity connected through the national grid or off-grid system had risen to 73 percent by the end of June last year, compared with 29 percent
five years ago.
