    Researchers at Keio University used iPS-derived neural stem cells to treat severe spinal cord injuries

    It is reported that the research group transplanted more than 2 million iPS-derived neural stem cells into the spinal cord of a patient with spinal cord injury during an operation last month


    The number of transplanted cells was determined based on previous animal experiments


    Masa Nakamura, a professor at Keio University who led the study, said this is undoubtedly a big step forward for stem cell therapy


    Much work remains to be done before the therapeutic range becomes too large, and the primary goal of this study is to determine the safety of the transplant approach


    An independent committee monitoring patients for up to three months has determined whether the trial can safely continue and whether other trials can be treated


    In addition, the research team hopes to see whether stem cell therapy can improve neurological function and quality of life in patients


    Details of the patient are still being kept under wraps, and the team said the trial of stem cell therapy for spinal cord injuries will focus on patients with spinal cord injuries within 14-28 days
