The Yang Hui research group of the Center of Excellence for Brain Intelligence of the Chinese Academy of Sciences has demonstrated that the bacterial retron system can be reversed transcribed in mammalian cells by expressing four retron systems (Ec48 , Ec73 , Ec86 and Ec107) that have been reported to have functions in mammalian cells.

Compared with the more commonly used DNA single-base editing and Prime editing , Retron editing that relies on HDR mechanism is relatively less restricted by the position of PAM ; moreover, Retron editing system does not need to provide additional foreign donor template DNA .
