Energy storage provider Younicos announced that it has signed an agreement with TerraForm Power to install and commission a 10-megawatt battery energy storage system and help upgrade
the system at the Kaheawa wind farm on Maui, Hawaii.
The battery system will primarily be used to provide ramp service to eliminate the effects of
wind variations.
The project is expected to be completed
in the second half of 2018.
The agreement requires Younicos to replace existing lead-acid batteries with advanced Samsung SDI lithium-ion batteries
.
The batteries will be managed
by Y.
Q, Younicos' proprietary control software.
Lithium-ion technology will provide significantly higher usable energy capacity potential and extend the lifetime of
the system.
It also enables fully automatic operation, eliminating the need for manual battery balancing or charge management
.
The project leader from Younicos said: "We are delighted to be working with TerraForm to implement this major energy storage system upgrade
.
The combination of wind energy and storage increases stability while also creating new revenue streams
for renewables through services such as peak shifting or arbitrage.
