At 96, Warren Buffett announces he will step down as Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway—what key information should we pay attention to?

Buffett’s stepping down as Chairman is part of a long-planned, clearly delineated succession process—not a sudden exit. Rather than focusing on the headline ‘the Oracle of Omaha retires,’ we can also look to the balance sheet he leaves behind: roughly $360 billion in cash and short-term U.S. Treasury securities—a clear signal of his view on today’s high-interest-rate environment. I. Buffett Steps Down as Chairman On Friday, in his annual letter to shareholders, 96-year-old Buffett announced he would step down as Chairman and immediately assume the title of Chairman Emeritus, remaining on the Board of Directors. He had previously stepped down as CEO on December 31, 2025; Greg Abel assumed full operational and investment responsibilities effective January 1, 2026. This time, Buffett has handed over the Chairmanship to his 71-year-old son, Howard. Why appoint his son—not Abel—as Chairman? Berkshire Hathaway deliberately separates these two roles. The Chairman serves more like a guardian—representing shareholders by safeguarding the company’s culture and core values, with authority to push back on management when necessary, but without involvement in day-to-day operations. Real executive and investment authority rests squarely with CEO Abel. Since Buffett holds about 30% of Berkshire’s shares, installing Howard as Chairman ensures continuity for both the company’s cultural legacy and its family-held equity stake. In his letter, Buffett wrote, ‘Time always wins,’ and added that now is the right moment to complete the transition. This succession plan has been years in the making—and the market was unsurprised. With Berkshire’s market capitalization standing at approximately $1.09 trillion, its stock price rose only just over 1% this year, indicating the transition had already been priced in. In Q2, net income more than doubled year-on-year, underscoring the stability of the underlying business. II. The $360 Billion Cash Position How much cash did Buffett leave behind? As of June 30, 2026, Berkshire held approximately $360 billion in cash and short-term U.S. Treasury securities—roughly RMB 2.4 trillion—the highest level ever recorded. Most of this consists of very short-dated U.S. Treasury bills. This figure even exceeds the total market value of Berkshire’s entire stock portfolio ($323.8 billion), meaning the capital Buffett has kept liquid and ready to deploy is greater than what he has already committed to equities. This is not simply a bearish bet on U.S. stocks. With the Federal Reserve restarting rate hikes, short-term U.S. Treasuries now yield over 4%—virtually risk-free. At just over 4%, that $360 billion generates roughly $15–16 billion in annual interest income—passive, secure, and substantial.

In his shareholder letter, he wrote: ‘A large portion of our portfolio remains concentrated in a small number of U.S. companies—Apple, American Express, Coca-Cola, and Moody’s—businesses we understand well, whose management teams we hold in high regard, and which we expect to compound value reliably for decades to come. This concentrated approach will continue. We won’t make significant changes to these positions unless we see fundamental shifts in their long-term economic prospects.’ He also noted that, together with Japan’s five major trading houses, these nine holdings collectively exceed $200 billion in market value—accounting for roughly two-thirds of Berkshire’s entire equity portfolio. The 13F filing for Q1 disclosed no changes to the four U.S. holdings. At the May 2 shareholder meeting, 95-year-old Buffett sat in the audience—not on stage—for the first time. He spoke emotionally about Berkshire’s Apple investment: ‘We spent about $35 billion acquiring Apple shares. Effectively, we entrusted that money to Apple’s management team—to make Berkshire proud—and we didn’t have to lift a finger. That’s our favorite way to run a business.’ Ten years later, including dividends, realized gains, and unrealized appreciation, that original $35 billion (pre-tax) had grown to $185 billion. Buffett said, ‘Today, Apple remains our largest holding.’ Apple has announced that Tim Cook will step down as CEO on September 1, succeeded by hardware engineering chief John Ternus; Cook will remain on Apple’s Board. Coca-Cola has also completed its CEO transition, with Henrique Braun succeeding James Quincey. At the shareholder meeting, Abel said he plans to meet separately with both incoming CEOs. ‘We know the quality of these two companies,’ Abel said. ‘Their boards are outstanding—and they’ve certainly chosen the right people after careful deliberation. Time will tell. The fact is, we’re genuinely excited about the incoming leaders—and we fully support the work done by the outgoing ones, who made these companies extraordinary.’ V. Resumption of Share Repurchases—Mainly on March 4 On the morning of March 5, Abel appeared on CNBC—the first time he appeared on television as CEO. Becky Quick’s opening question concerned Berkshire’s 2026 start: its stock had barely moved over the prior year, its cash pile neared $400 billion, and markets were eagerly awaiting his first major move. Abel confirmed that Berkshire had resumed share repurchases on March 3—ending a nearly two-year pause. Simultaneously, Berkshire filed Forms 4 and 8-K with the SEC. He also revealed a personal detail: he used his entire after-tax 2026 compensation—approximately $15.3 million—to purchase Berkshire shares. ‘First, it signals unequivocally that our interests are fully aligned with those of our shareholders, partners, and owners—that’s critically important,’ Abel said. ‘Second, as CEO taking over from Warren Buffett, I have absolute confidence in Berkshire. I’m inheriting a company built on an extraordinary foundation.’ Berkshire’s share repurchase discipline is spelled out in Abel’s first shareholder letter: repurchases will occur only when Berkshire’s stock price trades below a conservative estimate of its intrinsic value.
