How are corporate earnings forecasted? Time-series models make it easy.

We begin with the widely applied single exponential smoothing model: using the simple exponential smoothing model to forecast Johnson & Johnson’s quarterly earnings. 1. The decompose() function decomposes data components (1) Examine historical quarterly earnings data for Johnson & Johnson. Note: *Johnson & Johnson’s quarterly earnings (JohnsonJohnson) is a built-in dataset in R. *For many companies in their growth phase, earnings (or user base) change exponentially; companies experiencing merely linear growth cannot truly be considered growth-stage enterprises. From the plot above, we observe that Johnson & Johnson’s historical quarterly earnings exhibit overall exponential growth, albeit with fluctuations. Could these fluctuations in Johnson & Johnson’s quarterly earnings stem from inherent seasonality tied to its business nature—such as higher summer demand and lower winter demand for personal care products? While such seasonality is unavoidable, does it significantly distort the overall trend of the company’s quarterly earnings? Next, we separate the underlying trend, seasonal fluctuations, and other influencing factors from the raw data. (2) Use the decompose() function to decompose Johnson & Johnson’s quarterly earnings into seasonal, trend, and irregular (random) components. Use the names() function to inspect variable names within the components data frame: you will see the original series (x), plus the decomposed seasonal and trend components, among others. You can examine individual components—for instance, the seasonal component—whose output appears as follows: (3) Viewing components numerically is insufficiently intuitive; thus, we plot each component graphically. In the figure above: The first panel shows the historical observations; The second panel displays the trend component, revealing clear exponential growth; The third panel shows the seasonal component, exhibiting pronounced seasonality; The fourth panel depicts the irregular (random) component, indicating relatively small random fluctuations early on, but notably larger fluctuations between 1978 and 1980. From this graphical analysis, we draw a preliminary conclusion: Johnson & Johnson’s quarterly earnings follow an overall exponential growth trend with evident seasonality. However, visual inspection alone is inadequate—we must precisely estimate model parameters. 2. Fitting an exponential smoothing model using the ets() function To use the ets() function, first install the forecast package. Load the forecast package using the library() function (warnings displayed do not affect subsequent usage). Fit the model using the ets() function: From the output above, we see the level smoothing parameter alpha = 0.2776, the trend smoothing parameter beta = 0.0636, and the seasonal smoothing parameter = 0.5867.

The 'white petroleum' of the carbon-neutral era: ALB, SQM, and LTHM—lithium mining assets are ripe for revaluation.

Salt-lake lithium resources are primarily distributed across three regions: the Lithium Triangle of South America, western United States, and the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau salt-lake region in China. The most renowned among them is the Salar de Atacama, jointly developed by SQM and Albemarle (ALB)—though it should be noted that SQM and ALB hold only extraction rights over the Salar de Atacama. We remain bullish on the resource endowments of ALB and SQM. From the perspective of salt-lake resource distribution and supply capacity, SQM and ALB stand on equal footing. Next come Livent (spun off from FMC) and Orocobre. Domestically, Chinese brine-based lithium producers remain far from competitive with these international giants in terms of supply scale. Lithium compound production distribution As shown, in 2020, U.S.-based Albemarle Corporation (ALB) retained the world’s largest market share, followed by China’s Ganfeng Lithium in second place. SQM—23.77%-owned by Tianqi Lithium—ranked third, while Tianqi Lithium itself ranked fourth, and Livent fifth. From the standpoint of extraction costs, cost control constitutes one of the core elements of integrated competitiveness for lithium chemical enterprises—and serves as a key performance indicator reflecting internal management systems and operational effectiveness. A lithium mining company’s profitability hinges largely on its cost-control capability, with extraction costs representing a major portion of total costs. As illustrated in the chart above, the lowest global lithium extraction costs currently belong to FMC’s subsidiary Livent (LTHM), Albemarle (ALB), and Orocobre. Accordingly, this analysis focuses on the three companies boasting the strongest resource endowments: ALB, SQM, and Livent. Key Company Analysis Albemarle Corporation (ALB) Albemarle Corporation (NYSE: ALB), headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a global specialty chemicals company. Albemarle implements its AWE (Always Winning Excellence) business model, maintaining a global footprint in mineral resource development—including lithium—while delivering high-quality products and services, and fostering long-term, sustainable competitiveness alongside employees and customers. 1. Analysis of Albemarle’s lithium business Based on 2020 data, Albemarle’s primary businesses comprise lithium, catalysts, and bromine. Catalyst and bromine operations remained largely stable, growing at approximately the same pace as U.S. GDP. Our focus lies on lithium-related activities: lithium accounted for 37% of Albemarle’s total revenue in 2020, and the company projected industry growth at around 20%.
