While the parent company focused on meat processing, this subsidiary explored alternative uses for animal tissues. Since chemical synthesis was still primitive at the time, they used animal intestines to manufacture musical instrument strings—and tennis racket strings. In 1915, Thomas E. Wilson became president of this subsidiary. A visionary businessman, Wilson recognized that although sports were then largely reserved for aristocrats and the wealthy, participation would inevitably broaden dramatically. What Should Chinese Raw Material Companies Learn from Ashland’s 'Sale'?

Ashland was founded in the 1920s and has long focused on high-value-added markets such as life sciences, personal care, coatings, and specialty additives. In cosmetics, its product portfolio spans cellulose derivatives, film-forming agents, bioactive ingredients, and preservative systems; in pharmaceuticals, many of its products require lengthy customer qualification cycles. These businesses share a defining trait: gaining entry into a customer’s supply chain is extremely difficult—but once achieved, replacement costs are high. In June, Ancora publicly stated that Ashland possesses high-quality end markets, mature customer relationships, and assets protected by significant barriers to entry—yet its stock price had plunged nearly 50% since late 2022. To Ancora, the public market valuation had fallen below the potential value these assets might command in a control transaction. The core issue lies in execution. From fiscal year 2023 to 2025, Ashland’s sales declined from $2.191 billion to $2.113 billion, then further to $1.824 billion. However, these figures warrant closer scrutiny. The $289 million revenue decline in FY2025 comprised $153 million attributable to divestitures and portfolio optimization, plus additional impacts from lower volumes and shifting price mix. In other words, revenue contraction wasn’t solely due to organic slowdown—the company’s deliberate strategic streamlining played a major role. What truly eroded investor patience was the lack of clear, meaningful growth following those adjustments. In Q2 FY2026, Ashland’s sales rose 1% year-on-year—but adjusted EBITDA fell 9%. The company also lowered its full-year guidance, citing slower-than-expected ramp-up at its Hopewell facility, delays in the Calvert City project, and softening demand in certain end markets.
