Snow, ice, and wildfire weather warnings for Scotland Year Image source | BBC News This weekend, weather warnings for snow, ice, and wildfires have been issued across various regions of Scotland. From 3:00 p.m. on Saturday to 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, the UK Met Office issued snow and ice warnings for most of mainland Britain. Meanwhile, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) warned of an 'extreme' wildfire risk in parts of southwest and central Scotland. SFRS stated that cold, dry conditions can create an 'ideal environment' for wildfire spread. Temperatures plummeted sharply toward the end of this week, with Altnaharra recording -16°C—the lowest March temperature in the UK since 2010. More snowfall is expected this weekend, with accumulations forecast to reach up to 10 cm (4 inches). Rabbit 3. Strike action by oil and gas contractors demanding pay raises Image source | BBC News Oil and gas contractors operating on a series of platforms in the North Sea have voted to take industrial action. The RMT union stated that approximately 150 offshore service employees of Sparrows Group will take strike action over a pay dispute across more than 20 platforms. The strike action will affect several major operators, including Apache, Shell, and Harbour Energy. An additional 50 Sparrows employees are already supporting strike action on BP platforms in a separate pay dispute. Unite claims the strikes could shut down dozens of platforms. A series of one-day strikes planned by Unite members on BP platforms will begin on 29 March and continue until 7 June. Sharon Graham, General Secretary of Unite, said: 'The oil and gas industry is overflowing with record profits. Yet workers see virtually no income gains—and no improvements in terms and conditions. "Unite will support Sparrows members at every step in their fight for better jobs, pay, and conditions.' Rabbit 4. Cliff-top houses to be demolished Year Image source | BBC News Three houses located near the edge of a cliff in Norfolk will be demolished due to tidal erosion undermining the sandy cliff face. Some residents have vacated timber properties in Hemsby’s Marrams area, where certain homes stand less than 1 metre (3.2 feet) from the cliff edge—posing a collapse risk. Several outbuildings had already collapsed during high tide around 9:00 p.m. GMT on Friday. Demolition of these houses is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.

Who truly owns an oil field? The half-century journey of the North Sea’s Forties Field reveals the harsh realities of the energy industry

【Answer 2】 Who really owns an oil field? Most people’s first instinct is straightforward: subsurface resources legally belong to the host country’s government. A deeper answer might be: it depends on which company holds the hydrocarbon rights. Yet after reading the story of the North Sea’s Forties Field, you’ll realize reality is far more complex than any textbook suggests. It acts like a mirror, reflecting the true operational logic of the entire oil and gas industry. Forties Field’s status in the North Sea is roughly equivalent to Daqing Oilfield’s in China—it marks the birthplace of the UK’s modern petroleum industry. Discovered and developed by BP in the 1970s, at its peak it supplied a substantial portion of the UK’s crude oil, making it a genuinely national strategic asset. Under common-sense assumptions, such a historically significant field should remain firmly in BP’s hands, operated continuously by its discoverer. Reality tells a different story. In 2003, BP sold its Forties Field interests to U.S.-based independent oil and gas company Apache. The rationale was pragmatic: for a global oil major like BP, Forties had entered maturity and was no longer a high-growth core asset. Majors operate under higher capital thresholds—they prefer deploying funds into new exploration blocks or frontier projects to pursue growth. Yet the same field held entirely different value in Apache’s hands. Unlike majors, independents need not gamble on high-risk exploration; stable output and steady cash flow from mature fields represent ideal business opportunities. This transaction later became a classic case study in the oil and gas sector: majors divesting mature producing assets to independent operators. After taking over, Apache did not simply rely on existing production. Instead, it drilled infill wells and re-optimized development plans to fully unlock the aging field’s potential. Over the next 14 years, it consistently produced crude oil, recouped investment, and generated robust cash flow. In 2017, the field changed hands once again—this time acquired by chemical giant INEOS. Many wonder: Why would INEOS—a world-leading chemical group, neither a traditional international oil company (IOC) nor a national oil company (NOC)—acquire an aging oil field? The logic is simple: the chemical industry relies heavily on crude oil and natural gas feedstocks. Rather than purchasing raw materials on volatile open markets year after year, securing direct upstream control offers greater stability and cost efficiency. This strategy mirrors that of Japanese integrated trading houses like Mitsui and Mitsubishi, which have long pursued upstream integration. In its 2017 acquisition, INEOS secured not only the field’s operating rights but also the critical Forties Pipeline System—the artery carrying nearly 40% of all North Sea oil and gas exports at the time, a vital piece of UK energy infrastructure. Many immediately ask: Did Apache lose out? Viewed across the full project lifecycle, the answer is no. When majors divest, independents step in to manage operations intensively—and ultimately pass the asset downstream to players further along the value chain: each party secures precisely what it needs.
