Though Saudi Arabia appears to enjoy backing from global powers such as the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, these so-called allies are nothing but opportunistic cheerleaders—loud in rhetoric but utterly inactive in practice. Deep down, they’re secretly rooting for a bloody, mutually destructive war between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. Their much-touted ‘aerial intelligence support’ is little more than standing on the sidelines, watching the spectacle unfold. As for Saudi Arabia’s two so-called ‘brothers,’ Pakistan and Turkey, they too are playing it safe. Fully aware that ‘even a mighty dragon cannot suppress a local serpent,’ they’ve refused to join any direct military operations against the Houthis—no matter how many blank checks Riyadh waves at them. All they’re willing to do is help with defensive measures; otherwise, they’re content to drum up minor support, freeload in Saudi Arabia, and pocket some petty cash. That’s about the extent of their commitment. Then there’s Yemen itself. Internally, Yemen is currently divided among three main forces: the Houthis, the Saudi-backed Aden-based Yemeni government forces, and the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC). Beyond these, numerous smaller tribes simply wish to hold onto their own territories and remain neutral—unwilling to get drawn into any conflict. Although the STC nominally falls under the authority of the Aden-based government, it has openly declared its intention to hold an independence referendum in 2028. Under such circumstances, it naturally hopes for a brutal, all-out war between the Aden government forces and the Houthi forces—so it can sit back and reap the spoils. At present, only the Aden-based government forces remain loyal to Saudi Arabia—but their combat capability is abysmal: a ragtag force of underpaid, unmotivated troops, ill-equipped to wage serious warfare against the Houthis. What were they thinking? Externally, every ally harbors ulterior motives; internally, every faction pursues its own agenda. In this context, for Saudi Arabia to expect a unified front rallying under its banner to fight the Houthis to the death is sheer fantasy—even the late King Abdullah wouldn’t dare attempt such a gamble. Many still picture Houthi fighters as barefoot men wielding machine guns—but the reality is far different. Such accuracy from such height clearly demonstrates the Houthis’ mastery of advanced satellite-guided targeting technology. Don’t ask where they learned it—what matters is that they now possess it. And it’s not just tanks: the Houthis have also released footage showing their air defense units successfully shooting down a Royal Saudi Air Force F-15 fighter jet over Marib Province in Yemen. The video includes repeated religious chants, live footage of the burning, crashing aircraft, and wreckage bearing clear Saudi national insignia. Fortunately, it was a Saudi jet—not an American one—otherwise, how would the U.S. face the embarrassment? Granted, the downed F-15 is American-made, but Washington can always deflect blame onto poor Saudi pilot performance. The Houthis aren’t limiting their resistance to Yemen’s borders. Recently, they’ve launched repeated missile strikes against oil infrastructure in Riyadh—the Saudi capital—and against western Saudi air bases. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree announced at a press conference that ballistic missiles and drones had ‘scored direct hits’ on facilities operated by Saudi Aramco, vowing to continue their strategy of ‘escalation in response to escalation.’ Just hours earlier, the Houthis fired missiles at Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport. According to reports, airport operations have since been suspended.

Particular attention should be paid to the contest for control of the western Yemeni port city of Mocha. According to the Yemeni government-affiliated Saba News Agency, government forces announced they had retaken this strategic port; the Houthis, however, denied losing control, stating that fighting remains ongoing. Located in western Taiz Province, Mocha commands a vital Red Sea coastal artery and holds significant strategic importance for controlling the Red Sea coastline.
