Cost optimization of domestic aramid technology opens prospects for global market competition

Compared with overseas aramid producers, China’s domestic aramid industry is poised to further capture market share, primarily for the following reasons: 1) China leads global aramid capacity expansion. According to ChemInfo China, most new meta-aramid production capacity additions globally and in China over the next few years will originate from mainland China. Based on Tayho New Materials’ expansion plan, its meta-aramid capacity will reach 20,000 tons/year in 2024—approaching DuPont’s scale. By 2025, global and Chinese meta-aramid total capacities are projected to reach approximately 69,000 tons/year and 38,000 tons/year, respectively, with China accounting for 55% of global capacity. For para-aramid, global and Chinese total capacities are expected to exceed 125,000 tons/year and 36,000 tons/year, respectively, by 2025, with China representing 29% of global capacity. 2) Significant energy cost advantage. Aramid production consumes large amounts of electricity and steam. Recent regional geopolitical conflicts have triggered high inflation and rapidly rising energy costs overseas. In contrast, China has continuously enhanced its energy self-sufficiency, reduced dependence on energy imports, and ensured relatively stable energy supply and pricing. Moreover, China’s vigorous development of new energy sources helps reduce fuel consumption demand from traditional energy sources in the chemical industry. For example, China’s natural gas output rose from 250 million cubic meters per day in 2010 to 580 million cubic meters per day in 2022, achieving a compound annual growth rate of 7%. Amid soaring global energy prices in 2022, the average TTF natural gas futures price reached approximately €132.9 per MWh, whereas the average pipeline gas supply price from major Chinese suppliers ranged between ¥2–¥3 per cubic meter, with peak incremental gas sources priced at only ¥4–¥5 per cubic meter—far below international levels. Additionally, China’s abundant coal resources confer a distinct advantage in electricity cost. 3) Clear policy support. High-performance aramid fibers are prioritized by governments worldwide. For instance, the South Korean government allocated RMB 200 million in one-time funding to key enterprises engaged in industrialization research on para-aramid. Since the early 21st century, China has designated para-aramid and related fibers as one of its key strategic new materials; the State Council, National Development and Reform Commission, and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology have repeatedly included para-aramid in lists of critical new materials requiring priority development. As global trade uncertainties intensify, the urgency for domestic substitution continues to grow, suggesting strong ongoing policy support for the aramid sector. 4) Investment Recommendations Aramid fibers possess outstanding properties—including low density, high modulus, high tensile strength, cut resistance, corrosion resistance, heat resistance, electrical insulation, and flame retardancy—making them widely applicable across aerospace, defense, transportation, electronics & telecommunications, and tires. Further demand growth is anticipated as emerging sectors—including new-energy vehicles, wind power, photovoltaics, and 5G communications—deepen their penetration. The aramid market is led by U.S.-based DuPont and Japan’s Teijin. China’s domestic meta-aramid production share is higher than that of para-aramid. Although numerous Chinese firms have entered the sector, overall capacity utilization remains relatively low due to technological constraints and product quality issues—indicating substantial room for advancement in domestic aramid production. Chinese aramid enterprises are steadily breaking through via independent process technologies and domestically manufactured equipment. Going forward, they are expected to lead global aramid capacity growth. Combined with energy cost advantages and robust policy backing, the aramid industry in China is poised to enter a phase of rapid expansion.
