Changing CEOs is not uncommon in the automotive industry—but replacing six CEOs within just seven months carries a markedly different significance. Since March this year, Porsche, Nissan Motor, Stellantis Group, Jaguar Land Rover, Renault Group, and Volvo Cars have each appointed new chief executives. The reasons behind these six CEO transitions vary: some departures were involuntary, others driven by retirement or the pursuit of new opportunities. Yet regardless of cause, all incoming CEOs face remarkably similar—and exceptionally difficult—challenges. Here’s an overview of the leadership changes at these six automakers: ● On March 11, Nissan Motor appointed Ivan Espinosa to succeed Makoto Uchida as CEO. At the time, Nissan was mired in financial distress and had just seen merger talks with Honda collapse. ● On April 1, 74-year-old Hakan Samuelsson returned as CEO of Volvo Cars, succeeding Jim Rowan. From 2012 to 2022, Samuelsson led Volvo Cars to record sales and profitability. ● On June 23, veteran Antonio Filosa succeeded Carlos Tavares as CEO of Stellantis Group. Tavares resigned in December 2024 amid escalating tensions with the board, declining North American sales, and a profit warning issued by Stellantis. ● In July, Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo stepped down, and the company appointed long-time insider François Provost as his successor.
