Ice Mold Powder, Dream Volcanic Ash? This year’s most popular car colors are still…

In today’s era of aesthetics-driven consumption, automotive colors have become increasingly diverse. While automobile manufacturers continue striving for excellence in vehicle quality and performance, they also place great emphasis on color selection. Recently, Axalta—a global leader in pigment supply—released its 2020 'Global Production Vehicle Color Popularity Report,' compiled from data collected across countries and regions. Let’s take a look at the most popular colors. Recently, Axalta Coating Systems—headquartered in Philadelphia, USA—released new insights into color trends: the 68th edition of its 'Axalta Global Automotive Color Popularity Report.' The report reveals that although consumer preferences are growing ever more extreme and diversified—and automakers have experimented with niche, unconventional body colors—the mainstream aesthetic remains relatively stable, and dominant car colors retain their unshakable positions. The study shows white remained the world’s most popular vehicle color in 2020, capturing a global market share of 38%. Even more astonishingly, white has held the top spot for ten consecutive years—making it the single most frequently purchased car color worldwide, unmatched in market dominance. In other words, when you’re unsure which car color to choose, just close your eyes and pick white: it’s classic, simple, and stands the test of time. Beyond white, black (19%) and gray (15%) ranked second and third, respectively, among this year’s top automotive colors. Black’s market share has remained comparatively steady over the years and is especially favored by luxury car owners; gray, meanwhile, is the fastest-rising favorite—its market share surged by 2% this year, reaching a decade-high level. Gray is also perceived as more modern and luxurious. Regional markets show some variation in color popularity. In Asia, white’s market share declined slightly by 1%, yet still reached 48%. Owing to gray’s rapid rise, silver—which had previously been highly popular (9%)—slipped to fourth place.

Coating Vision | 2027 Annual Color Trends Roundup! How do Benjamin Moore, Dulux, PPG, Sherwin-Williams, and Jotun differ?

French Press Coffee belongs to an entirely new neutral color family, offering exceptionally broad application potential. It works equally well for whole-house wall painting, accent walls, woodwork details, building façades, and commercial spaces—each context unlocking distinct effects: tranquil coffee-nest interiors, architectural tonal anchoring, softly assertive façades, and warm commercial environments. 05 Benjamin Moore: Webster Green Benjamin Moore’s 2027 Color of the Year is Webster Green (HC-130), officially unveiled on October 14. It is not a newly formulated hue but rather a classic green selected directly from Benjamin Moore’s historical color library. Hannah Yeo, Senior Manager of Brand Color Marketing at Benjamin Moore, explained this was an intentional choice—a green that evokes no nostalgia. Unlike emerald green’s intensity or sage green’s softness, Webster Green possesses a clear, defined tone: timeless, pleasing to the eye, and never overly assertive. Looking at the sequence of annual colors, last year’s Silhouette (AF-655) was a deep brown with charcoal undertones, whereas Webster Green boldly re-centers a distinctly defined color. Its uniqueness lies not in novelty, but in the depth of the brand’s color archive: a longstanding shade brought back into the spotlight—bridging heritage while responding to today’s demand for clarity, stability, and enduring visual appeal. ‘Not nostalgic’ does not mean severing ties with the past, but rather enabling a classic hue to acquire fresh relevance in the present. On walls, it delivers a confident yet unobtrusive backdrop—ideal for spaces requiring a stable foundation without veering into either excessive softness or overwhelming intensity. 06 Axalta: Redefined Axalta’s 2027 Global Automotive Color of the Year is Redefined—a saturated, luminous ruby red capable of capturing and reflecting light, with subtle shimmer that creates unexpected depth and dimensionality—elegant and jewel-like in appearance. Redefined continues Axalta’s thirteen-year tradition of annual automotive color selections. Around 2013, Axalta launched its global automotive color-of-the-year program with 'Radiant Red'; Redefined thus serves as a contemporary response to that legacy. Advances in pigments, special-effect technologies, and color science now allow reds to be richer, more layered, and more refined—enabling classic reds to find renewed expression in today’s context. In character, Redefined retains red’s inherent confidence and passion, yet surpasses traditional reds in sophistication and lasting visual appeal. Designed for automotive OEM and refinish applications, it balances bold self-expression with refined durability. Its inspiration stems from those meaningful moments, memories, and experiences that give every journey significance—celebrating the joy of exploration while echoing consumers’ growing desire for vehicles that harmonize individuality with long-term resilience. 07 Sherwin-Williams: Cottage Door + Celery Strictly speaking, Sherwin-Williams has not yet announced its own 2027 Color of the Year. However, multiple annual colors and trend forecasts have already been released under the Sherwin-Williams umbrella, reflecting a dual-track strategy—distinct color narratives across different sub-brands and distribution channels. Valspar, a Sherwin-Williams company, has named Cottage Door (Color #8004-38E) its 2027 Color of the Year. This is a reflective mid-tone neutral blue, skillfully blending warm and cool undertones to evoke comfort, authenticity, and groundedness—ideal for establishing calm yet engaging spatial foundations amid increasingly complex design environments.
