Key Indicators Explained for Better Financial Statement Interpretation—Non-recurring Gains and Losses

Net profit attributable to shareholders of the listed company (‘attributable net profit’) refers to the net profit reported in the consolidated financial statements of a listed company, after deducting the portion attributable to minority interests—that is, the net profit belonging to the shareholders who hold shares in the listed company. Non-recurring gains and losses refer to gains or losses (after tax) arising from infrequent, non-core business activities of a listed company, after deducting the portion attributable to minority interests. Definition Non-recurring gains and losses are income or expense items—gains or losses (after tax)—that are either unrelated to the company’s production and operations, or although related, are excluded from recurring operating results due to their nature, magnitude, or frequency, thereby impairing an accurate and fair assessment of the company’s current-period operating performance and profitability. Typically, non-recurring gains and losses include various government subsidies; gains or losses from disposal of fixed assets or other long-term assets; gains or losses from financial asset transactions; and other non-operating income or expenses unrelated to core operations—for example, donations. A defining characteristic of non-recurring gains and losses is their lack of sustainability: such items may occur in the current year but are unlikely to recur in the same form or amount next year—for instance, government grants, gains from disposal of fixed assets, or gains/losses from trading stocks or other securities. Non-recurring gains and losses shall include the following items: (1) Gains or losses arising from disposal of long-term equity investments, fixed assets, construction-in-progress, intangible assets, and other long-term assets; (2) Tax refunds or reductions granted without formal approval or exceeding authorized authority; (3) Government subsidies in all forms; (4) Income from funds occupied by non-financial enterprises, recognized in the current period’s profit or loss; (5) Gains or losses from short-term investments—except those earned by financial institutions duly licensed and approved by competent state authorities; (6) Gains or losses from entrusted investments; (7) Other non-operating income and expenses (excluding asset impairment provisions accrued in the ordinary course of business per accounting standards); (8) Asset impairment provisions accrued due to force majeure events, such as natural disasters; (9) Reversals of impairment provisions previously recognized in prior years; (10) Gains or losses from debt restructuring; (11) Gains or losses from asset swaps; (12) Gains exceeding fair value arising from transactions with manifestly unfair pricing; (13) Retrospective adjustments to prior-period net profit resulting from changes in accounting policies reflected in comparative financial statements; (14) Other items designated by the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) as meeting the definition of non-recurring gains and losses. Attributable net profit—the full term for ‘net profit attributable to shareholders of the listed company’—refers to the net profit reported in the consolidated financial statements, less the portion attributable to minority interests, and is enjoyed collectively by all shareholders holding shares in the listed company. How to Analyze Non-recurring Gains and Losses and Attributable Net Profit? Non-recurring gains and losses appear in the income statement as part of total profit. Whether exceptionally large gains or losses, they affect the listed company’s final reported profitability and thus distort analysis of its underlying operating performance. Therefore, when analyzing a company’s core business operations, analysts typically exclude the impact of non-recurring gains and losses before conducting further analysis. Here, two points warrant special attention: since these items are ‘non-recurring’, they may represent either non-recurring gains or non-recurring losses—each exerting a different effect on attributable net profit.

What do 'Other Business Revenue' and 'Non-operating Income' each include?

Other business revenue refers to revenue generated from activities outside the scope of the company’s primary business operations (the scope of primary business operations can be verified via the business license issued by the Administration for Market Regulation). Non-operating income refers to incidental gains unrelated to the company’s regular operating activities. Based on this definition, distinguishing between the two is straightforward.
