Introduction to the Construction Plan for a Dietary Nutrition Practical Training Laboratory

A comprehensive practical training solution for nutrition education. Professor Yu Huiquan of Okayama University, Japan, once pointed out in an article that such a solution should typically include the following modules: anthropometric and physiological/biochemical assessment; foundational nutrition practice; nutritional calculation training; food preparation experience; food sensory evaluation; and specialized dietary development. With these components in place, systemic solutions can be provided for various pain points encountered in nutrition practical teaching. I. Training Objectives This program aims to cultivate well-rounded professionals—morally upright, intellectually capable, physically fit, aesthetically appreciative, and industrious—with strong innovative awareness, sound professional ethics, and self-directed learning abilities. Graduates will master theoretical knowledge in modern nutrition science, food hygiene, and health management; proficiently apply new technologies related to nutrition and health, food hygiene and functional component testing, quality supervision and control, and development/application of nutrition-focused foods; and be qualified to work in roles such as nutritional intervention for chronic diseases, elderly care management, and R&D, production, inspection, testing, and hygiene management within the food industry. II. Common Professional Training Tools [Hardware Equipment] 1. Body Measurement Devices 2. Balanced Diet Pagoda The core tool of the Chinese Dietary Guidelines is the "Chinese Balanced Diet Pagoda", which serves as the fundamental visual representation of a rational dietary pattern. It specifies food classification principles and recommended intake ranges, playing a pivotal role in nutrition education. However, a widespread problem in China today is the misuse of the U.S. “Food Pyramid”—a model officially discontinued by the U.S. in 2012—as a substitute for the "Balanced Diet Pagoda" in teaching, resulting in a fundamental conceptual error that misleads students. Therefore, we strongly advocate that standardized nutrition education in China must be grounded in China’s official Dietary Guidelines standards. The TGC Balanced Diet Pagoda represents the gold standard within the nutrition community. Beyond accurate appearance, the food models embedded in the pagoda must be quantitatively precise: (i) food models must be life-size (1:1 scale), physically indistinguishable from real foods; (ii) the total energy content represented by all foods in the pagoda must closely match the recommended intake values stated in its explanatory materials; and (iii) the proportional distribution of PFC (protein, fat, carbohydrates) among the foods depicted must conform to the recommended energy-providing nutrient ratios stipulated for balanced diets. A Balanced Diet Pagoda used for nutrition practical training must satisfy all three of these professional requirements. After all, higher education cultivates professionals with rigorous technical competence—and educators bear the responsibility of ensuring accurate knowledge transmission. 3. Food Selection Models Food models come in numerous types and are available through various channels. In practice, we have observed that low-quality, counterfeit food simulation models suffer primarily from inaccurate quantification, unreliable data, non-standardized nutrition labeling (not compliant with China’s national standards), mismatched volume-to-label ratios, and non-1:1 weight correspondence. To avoid such issues, nutrition-specific food models are defined by the following criteria: ① Food models must be life-size (1:1 scale); manufacturers must provide proportionally and weight-accurate models tailored to pedagogical needs;

Oriented Toward the Life and Health of the People: Launching a New Era of Industry–Academia–Research Integration and Innovation in "Precision Nutrition"

This summit was jointly organized by the Basic Nutrition Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society, the Innovation Committee on Geriatric Health Science of the Chinese Society of Geriatric Health Care Medicine, the R&D Professional Committee of the China Nutrition Health Food Association, the Key Laboratory of Nutrition, Metabolism and Food Safety at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and strategic partners including By-Health Co., Ltd. It follows the "2017 International Symposium on Precision Health and Precision Nutrition", serving as an industry-wide event convened to implement the innovation-driven development strategy with a focus on the life and health of the people—and to highlight the critical role of precision nutrition in health management and disease prevention. Centered on the core concepts of "precision nutrition"—namely, precision assessment, precision diagnosis, precision prediction, and precision intervention—the summit comprehensively showcased the latest research advances, cutting-edge technologies, application-oriented outcomes, and commercial products in this field. Emphasizing integrated innovation, the summit prioritized robust collaboration among nutrition science, medicine, and industry—jointly charting pathways forward for China’s precision nutrition initiatives and creating platforms for communication and cooperation toward achieving holistic public health. Co-chairs of the summit were Dr. Lin Xu, Group Leader at the Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chair of the Basic Nutrition Branch of the Chinese Nutrition Society; and Dr. Yan Chen, Deputy Director of the same institute. Dozens of top-tier experts and scholars—including Academician Junshi Chen, Academician Lin Li, and Academician Dongfeng Gu—from China’s nutrition science, life sciences, and medical communities attended to provide guidance. Also invited were senior R&D executives from leading domestic and international enterprises, including By-Health. "Precision Nutrition" Emerges as a Global Hotspot; Multidimensional Collaboration in the Nutrition and Health Industry Opens New Opportunities The global outbreak of COVID-19 has heightened public appreciation for health and life—and further underscored the central role of nutritional science in promoting health and preventing disease. "Precision nutrition" leverages multiple advanced technologies and concepts—including multi-omics, wearable devices, medical imaging, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence—to deliver personalized dietary and lifestyle interventions and guidance for individuals. This approach enables more effective health promotion and disease prevention. Consequently, research and translation in "precision nutrition" have become frontiers and focal points both domestically and internationally. For instance, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently stated: "Precision nutrition answers the question of 'how to eat to maintain health' and represents the best strategy for catalyzing nutritional science and related fields into clinically meaningful dietary solutions." Over the two-day summit, five thematic sessions were held, focusing on: (1) Prospects for the Application of Precision Nutrition; (2) Technologies for Precision Assessment and Diagnosis; (3) Technologies for Precision Intervention and Personalized Management; (4) Databases, Algorithmic Models, and Precision Prediction; and (5) Commercial Applications of Precision Nutrition–Related Products and Technologies. Scientists and entrepreneurs engaged in in-depth dialogue on topics including new challenges, new mindsets, new goals, and new pathways for translating precision nutrition research into practice—exchanging needs and exploring novel collaborative models for implementing precision nutrition technologies. Additionally, the "2020 Precision Nutrition White Paper V1.0" was jointly released at the summit by the Precision Nutrition Research Translation Industry Alliance—a consortium initiated by the Shanghai Institute of Nutrition and Health (CAS), By-Health, BASF (Germany), TNO (Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research), DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences, and Shuzheng Kangxun.
