A missile and drone attack struck Riyadh Airport in Saudi Arabia, killing 12 people and injuring 309. What information is particularly noteworthy? What impact does this have on the Middle East situation?

• July 13 (triggering event): The Saudi-led coalition and Yemeni government forces carried out multiple consecutive airstrikes on Sana’a International Airport in Yemen—under Houthi control—destroying its runway. This successfully intercepted an Iranian Mahan Air passenger flight carrying a high-level Houthi delegation returning from a condolence visit. • Night of July 13 (immediate Houthi retaliation): In direct retaliation for the runway’s destruction, the Houthis claimed they launched massive barrages of munitions and drones against Abha International Airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia; they also forcibly detained an International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) aircraft and personnel in Sana’a as leverage. • July 20 (Houthi announces maritime blockade): The Houthis declared a comprehensive maritime blockade against Saudi ports and commercial vessels under the slogan “siege for siege.” • Early September (escalation of ground and maritime control conflicts): As regional hostilities involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran dragged on, the Houthis continued seizing strategic Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait locations, frequently threatening Saudi energy infrastructure and oil tankers. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called U.S. President Donald Trump requesting assistance in striking the Houthis—but was rebuffed. • October 5 (full-scale escalation / “Yemen Dawn Operation”): • With aerial support from Saudi Arabia, Yemeni government forces launched the large-scale “Yemen Dawn Operation.” The Saudi-led coalition deployed approximately 100 warplanes, conducting 156 massive airstrikes across six provinces—including Sana’a, Sa’dah, and Al Hudaydah—in a single day, targeting Houthi missile sites and drone factories. • In full-scale counterattack, the Houthis launched three waves of cross-border long-range strikes the same day, using ballistic missiles and domestically produced “Shahed” drones to hit Riyadh, the Aramco refinery in Rabigh (causing fires), and the Khamis Mushait Air Base. • October 6–7 (first severe airport casualties): Low-cost Houthi drones and ballistic missiles successfully executed mixed-mode penetration. Abha International Airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh were both struck, resulting in 3 deaths (including citizens of Morocco, Algeria, and Sudan) and 36 injuries. • October 8 (high-frequency consecutive attacks): • Within 24 hours, the Houthis launched their third major strike on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, firing two cruise missiles at the airport in the evening and launching a ballistic missile toward Najran Airport—severely disrupting air operations at both airports. • The Saudi-led coalition responded with intense retaliatory bombing, conducting dozens of airstrikes across Yemeni territory—including renewed concentrated bombardment of Al Hudaydah International Airport and Sana’a International Airport, both under Houthi control. • Afternoon of October 10 (peak of conflict / capital airport paralyzed): A combined Houthi missile-and-drone formation struck King Khalid International Airport’s Terminal 3 in Riyadh and ignited its fuel depot. The attack killed 12 people and injured 309—including citizens of the U.S., Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Riyadh Airport was immediately forced into indefinite suspension, with hundreds of flights canceled. • Night of October 10 (full-scale mutual bombardment): • The Saudi-led coalition again conducted comprehensive airstrikes on Sana’a International Airport in Yemen in response. • That night, the Houthis expanded their strike range: one projectile landed near King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, eastern Saudi Arabia; another ballistic missile aimed at the city of Hafr Al-Batin was intercepted by coalition defenses. • Early morning of October 11 (Trump’s statement): Saudi Arabia condemned the Houthis’ actions as constituting “war crimes.” U.S. President Donald Trump urgently issued a statement condemning the attacks as “unacceptable” and announced he would soon decide whether U.S. forces would directly join Saudi-led airstrikes against the Houthis. The Houthis responded by stating that if Saudi Arabia reciprocally halted its attacks, they would be willing to facilitate agreements among all parties to avoid mutual strikes on humanitarian civilian infrastructure—including airports and seaports.

A fresh attack on Riyadh Airport in Saudi Arabia has caused 1 death and 11 injuries. The Houthis claim Saudi forces also attacked Sana’a International Airport in Yemen. Will this bilateral conflict continue escalating?

Saudi Arabia’s current aggressive counteroffensive against the Houthis appears proactive—but in reality, it is a step-by-step descent into a geopolitical trap meticulously laid by the United States. This war, into which Saudi Arabia was passively drawn, has not enhanced its border security; instead, it has backfired onto Saudi soil, continuously draining national resources and completely forfeiting Saudi Arabia’s strategic initiative in Middle Eastern power politics. The deterioration began with a highly destructive domestic attack. On October 10, Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport suffered a precise Houthi strike, killing 12 people and injuring 309—including citizens of multiple countries. The attack severely damaged core airport infrastructure, paralyzing the terminal and halting all flights. Dozens of international airlines suspended services to Saudi Arabia, and numerous foreign embassies issued maximum-security alerts—shattering Saudi Arabia’s national security image. In fact, this was no impromptu Houthi reprisal. As early as October 6–7, the Houthis had already launched consecutive strikes on Riyadh and Abha airports, inflicting dozens of casualties. They publicly declared their operational principle: “airport for airport, blockade for blockade, escalation for escalation”—all retaliatory actions were explicitly framed as proportional responses to the Saudi-led coalition’s bombing of Sana’a Airport. As the conflict intensifies, domestic order in Saudi Arabia has descended into chaos: hundreds of flights canceled in a single day; schools across multiple cities urgently shifted to online instruction; numerous foreign-invested enterprises mandated full remote work; and major international events—including the planned Saudi International Petroleum Conference and Investment Summit—have been repeatedly disrupted. At this point, many wonder: This geopolitical conflict has, from start to finish, had little to do with Saudi Arabia—so why did it voluntarily enter the fray and become deeply mired in turmoil? The answer is: U.S. manipulation—and betrayal! In July this year, the United States proactively offered Saudi Arabia a major strategic incentive: pledging to grant access to nuclear technology, assist in constructing nuclear reactors, and provide Saudi Arabia with special exemptions from stringent international verification mechanisms. This rare strategic privilege captivated Saudi leadership, prompting them to abandon neutrality and actively join the war. Yet the very next day after the agreement was signed, the U.S. abruptly reversed course—imposing harsh additional conditions: Saudi Arabia must normalize relations with Israel before any nuclear technology commitments would be fulfilled. As the de facto leader of the Sunni Arab world, if Saudi Arabia were to establish diplomatic ties with Israel while bypassing the Palestinian issue, it would effectively abandon the moral stance long upheld across the Arab world, forfeit its leadership prestige across the Islamic world, and bear the political burden of betraying Palestine—both domestically and across the entire Arab community. This is a red line Saudi Arabia simply cannot cross.
