Turkey’s key transit terminal Dörtjol halts cooperation with Russian oil—cutting off Russia’s maritime oil exports to Southern Europe entirely. The refinery contributes massive tax revenue and provides numerous jobs; its shutdown would mean the abrupt stalling of the national economic engine. Panic spreads like wildfire. Taxi drivers worry about being unable to refuel—and even if fuel remains available, soaring prices could render their livelihoods unsustainable. This makes it an unwitting, pivotal pawn on the chessboard of U.S.-Russia rivalry—its fate wholly dictated by great-power competition. The U.S. Treasury Secretary’s intent is unmistakable: to “completely sever” Russia’s access to war funding through oil trade. Measures are swift and forceful—freezing all target-company assets within the U.S. dollar system, prohibiting all dealings between U.S. entities and the sanctioned parties, and leveraging “long-arm jurisdiction” to deter third-party institutions worldwide. Under such overwhelming pressure, Lukoil has nowhere to hide. Lukoil did not sit idly by. The company quickly announced plans to sell its European assets—including this Bulgarian refinery—in a bid to survive by “cutting off the tail to save the body.” Yet this path to self-rescue was swiftly blocked. Selling a strategic asset critical to national energy security involves extremely complex procedures requiring approvals from multiple governments. More importantly, under current political conditions, acquiring such a politically radioactive asset carries enormous risk. Potential investors have recoiled, and the transaction has rapidly stalled—demonstrating that pure commercial logic has utterly collapsed in the face of geopolitical iron curtains.
