Fermented Plant Protein: The Next Trillion-Dollar Market

Fermented plant protein is rapidly gaining traction in the animal feed sector, emerging as a highly promising raw material. Two U.S. companies—Green Plains and Houdek—are at the forefront of this innovation, developing novel ingredients aimed at enhancing the sustainability and nutritional quality of aquaculture and pet food feeds. Green Plains’ Transformation: Fermented Corn Protein Originally focused on ethanol production, Green Plains has evolved into a sustainable biorefinery over recent years. In 2018, the company launched a strategic initiative emphasizing high-protein ingredient development, divesting non-core assets and forging key partnerships. By mid-2020, its biorefinery had shipped its first batch of Ultra-High Protein products—containing over 50% protein and exhibiting high digestibility. In April 2023, Green Plains introduced Sequence, a plant-based protein ingredient combining corn and yeast, with protein content reaching up to 60%. Louis Rens, Senior Vice President of Global Ingredient Sales, emphasized that global expansion lies at the core of the company’s high-protein strategy: “We’ve always believed international expansion helps mitigate risk by diversifying our customer base. Since joining the company in 2021, I’ve seen our strategy center squarely on substantial growth in the protein business—including plans to build five new production facilities. We conducted in-depth market analyses to identify where our protein products can deliver value. Working closely with our nutrition and commercial teams, we pinpointed potential markets and uncovered promising opportunities. We conduct these analyses regularly to capture emerging market trends and track execution progress.” Rens noted that shrimp farming exemplifies high protein demand in aquaculture—a sector increasingly shifting away from marine proteins like fishmeal toward plant-based alternatives. Similarly, rainbow trout farming is reducing reliance on marine proteins and turning instead to cost-effective animal by-product proteins, such as poultry by-product meal. Beyond shrimp and rainbow trout, Green Plains has expanded into new markets—including sea bass, sea bream, and tilapia. Feed ingredient options are limited in these sectors, and Green Plains offers affordable, plant-based alternatives that meet high-protein requirements while replacing costly animal proteins.

CCUS Gains Momentum! Green Plains Posts Profit in Q4 2025 After Turning Around Prior-Year Loss

U.S. biofuel producer Green Plains recently reported its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2025, posting a net profit of $11.9 million—reversing a $54.9 million net loss in the same period last year. The company projects that revenue from carbon credits and related policy incentives will reach at least $188 million in 2026. This improvement stems primarily from the company’s strategic investments in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) and low-carbon fuel production. CEO Chris Osowski stated during the earnings call on February 5 that the company’s “carbon monetization strategy” has begun generating cash flow. This quarter, Green Plains recognized $27.7 million in Section 45Z tax credit carbon credits and has already received the first related payment. Currently, carbon capture systems at Green Plains’ three ethanol plants—in York, Central City, and Wood River, Nebraska—are fully operational, capturing over 90% of the facilities’ CO₂ emissions and transporting the captured CO₂ to Wyoming for permanent geological sequestration.
