What specific U.S. goods is Canada targeting with new 'dollar-for-dollar' countertariffs, and when do they take effect?

Canada is imposing steeper import taxes—set at 15%, 25%, or 50%—on more than 700 U.S. goods starting September 8, including fish, cheese, smartphones, steel, and other products 'most affected by U.S. tariffs'; the list mirrors items hit by Washington’s recent 50% tariffs and includes goods made of steel and aluminum already subject to a global 50% U.S. sectoral tariff.

What legal authority did the Trump administration cite to justify its latest 50% tariffs on Canadian goods, and what was its stated rationale?

The Trump administration invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930—a never-before-used, Great Depression-era provision authorizing up to 50% import taxes on goods from countries that have 'discriminated against U.S. businesses'—and claimed Canada discriminated against U.S. autos, alcohol, and dairy products, particularly following earlier U.S. import taxes last year.
