Carbon capture and utilization/storage (CCUS) technology offers significant advantages for oil extraction. These benefits extend not only to enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and greenhouse gas emission reduction but also to promoting sustainable development across the energy sector. Consequently, CCUS technology is poised to become one of the key developmental directions for future oil extraction. I. Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) • High EOR efficiency: Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a gas highly soluble in both oil and water. When large quantities dissolve into crude oil, they cause oil volume expansion, viscosity reduction, decreased oil–water interfacial tension, and altered oil density—favoring more efficient crude oil flow within reservoirs. This improves oil production rates, oil displacement efficiency, and residual oil recovery. CO₂-EOR typically increases crude oil recovery by 7–15% and extends well production lifespans by 15–20 years. • Broad applicability: CO₂-EOR technology applies not only to conventional reservoirs but also to low-permeability and unconventional reservoirs. For low-permeability reservoirs, CO₂ flooding demonstrates clear technical advantages over water flooding. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), globally, approximately 300–600 billion barrels of oil resources are suitable for CO₂-EOR development. • High technological maturity: After years of research, development, and field application, CO₂-EOR technology has achieved relative maturity and is now widely deployed worldwide. II. Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction • CO₂ sequestration: During oil extraction, CCUS technology enables captured CO₂ to be injected deep underground for permanent geological storage.
