‘King of Engineering Plastics’: High-end grades rely on imports, low-end grades face oversupply—market conditions are starkly polarized.

Polycarbonate (PC) is hailed as the 'King of Engineering Plastics,' prized for its exceptional strength and toughness, heat resistance, and optical clarity. It is widely used in automotive lightweighting, electronics and optics, new energy applications, and more. As of 2025, China accounts for over 40% of global PC production capacity (exceeding 4.5 million tons/year). Yet domestic high-end product localization remains below 30%, while low-end products are already confronting overcapacity. Driven by policy, industry transformation is accelerating: non-phosgene production processes now account for 35% of total output, and emerging technologies—including bio-based PC—are entering pilot-scale testing. Despite numerous challenges—including price volatility of raw material bisphenol A (BPA) and international technology restrictions—polycarbonate continues to lead high-end material innovation and industrial upgrading, thanks to its irreplaceable combination of performance attributes. I. Industry Status and Core Characteristics Supply–Demand Imbalance: Capacity Expansion vs. Structural Mismatch According to the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation’s 2023 report, China’s total PC capacity stood at 3.8 million tons/year in 2023 and is projected to reach 4.5 million tons/year by 2025—over 40% of global capacity. However, low-end general-purpose grades still constitute more than 60% of total output. On the demand side, growth in traditional construction applications has slowed to just 2–3% annually (National Bureau of Statistics data), whereas demand from high-end sectors—including new-energy vehicles and electronic appliances—is surging at 8–10% annually (CCID Consulting forecast). Technological Barriers and Industrial Chain Coordination Domestic producers predominantly employ the phosgene process (≈65% share), though the non-phosgene melt transesterification process—preferred internationally for environmental reasons—is gaining traction. High-end grades remain largely dependent on phosgene-based synthesis; domestic localization of such high-end products remains under 30% (China Chemical Society data). Bisphenol A (BPA), the primary raw material, accounts for 60–70% of PC production costs. BPA prices fluctuated by 6–8% in 2023 (ICIS Price Index); in 2024, a marked decline in BPA prices significantly squeezed profit margins for vertically integrated PC manufacturers. Meanwhile, low-end producers—unable to command price premiums—face mounting cost pressure. Policy Framework and Global Competition Per the ‘14th Five-Year Plan for the Petrochemical Industry,’ China aims to eliminate 300,000 tons/year of outdated PC capacity by 2025 and raise the share of non-phosgene processes to over 50%. Global high-end markets remain dominated by Covestro and SABIC (combined market share >70%). In 2023, Chinese PC exports to Southeast Asia reached 350,000 tons (General Administration of Customs data); with the commissioning of Zhejiang Petrochemical’s new facility and Wanhua Chemical’s capacity expansion in 2024, actual export volume is projected to reach 750,000–850,000 tons. II. Profitability Divergence: High-End Breakthroughs vs. Low-End Pressure High-end grades retain significant technological barriers. Medical-grade PC (e.g., for hemodialyzers) and optical-grade PC (e.g., for AR/VR lenses) achieve gross margins of 18–22% (per Wanhua Chemical’s annual report)—far exceeding those of general-purpose grades (≈8–10%). Through vertical integration (BPA self-sufficiency >70%) and specialized PC R&D, Wanhua Chemical increased high-end product revenue share by 25% in 2023 (company annual report). In 2024, a wave of differentiated new products entered the market, further strengthening Wanhua’s competitive edge in PC.

Covestro opens a polycarbonate copolymer plant in Europe.

Hello everyone—I’m Xiao Ku @ PlasticLibrary.com, a seasoned and restless veteran of the chemical industry, dedicated for years to helping structural engineers identify optimal engineering plastic solutions. • World’s first: Covestro has developed a solvent-free melt process suitable for a broad range of polycarbonate copolymers. • Wide application scope—including mobility, electrical/electronics, and healthcare. Covestro has inaugurated its first industrial-scale polycarbonate (PC) copolymer plant at its Antwerp site in Belgium. The company’s newly developed platform technology combines an innovative solvent-free melt process with a novel reactor concept. [To explore more industry knowledge—on ‘plastics,’ ‘engineering plastics,’ ‘modified plastics,’ extensive material property databases, abundant material selection case studies, and cost-reduction & efficiency-enhancement solutions—visit PlasticLibrary.com!] This marks the commercialization of PC materials with tunable properties, previously developed and tested only at laboratory and pilot scales. The investment—amounting to several million dollars—covers both a pilot line and full-scale production facility. Beyond simplifying the new manufacturing process, integration with four existing PC production lines at the Antwerp site offers distinct advantages—combining global production scale with the flexibility of a standalone unit. New Process Enables Material Innovation Sucheta Govil, Covestro’s Chief Commercial Officer, stated: “This new manufacturing process is the world’s first—and currently the only one—that enables us to offer a broad portfolio of innovative materials.” “With this new plant, we can now produce and launch new polymeric materials at industrial scale faster than ever before.”

Covestro to slash Antwerp PC capacity, close BPA plant

just now

Covestro will close three polycarbonate lines and a bisphenol-A plant in Antwerp citing Asian overcapacity and high energy costs, affecting 260 jobs and shifting focus to specialty grades.
