Surging 51-fold! BASF and Dow delivered逆袭 Q2 financial results—among global chemical companies pursuing 'slimming down and upgrading quality,' who stands out as the top performer?

Losses at the cyclical bottom prompted both companies to realign their business portfolios and reduce exposure to homogenous, bulk polymer & plastics businesses: Dow scaled back its general-purpose polyethylene capacity for packaging plastics while ramping up investments in high-performance silicones and new-energy materials—to hedge against cyclical volatility in commodity plastics. BASF divested its entire low-margin coatings business and refocused on four core, high-profit segments: Chemicals, Materials, Industrial Solutions, and Nutrition & Care. It designated Surface Treatment and Agricultural Solutions as distinctive, self-sustaining businesses—minimizing drag from low-return operations. Both firms reached a shared conclusion: mere scale expansion in generic polyolefins cannot sustain profitability across chemical cycles; instead, high-end specialty materials and integrated, low-cost production capacity form the bedrock of stable earnings. Key differences: structural divergence in profit quality, cash flow, and regional footprint 1. Profit growth quality: Dow’s gains are entirely organic; BASF’s rely heavily on one-time gains Dow’s $802 million net income for Q2 contained no asset-sale proceeds or government subsidies—all derived from expanded polyethylene margin spreads and internal cost reductions, reflecting genuine improvement in core operational capability and sustainable profitability. In contrast, of BASF’s €4.1 billion net income, €3.5 billion came from the sale of its coatings business; excluding this, underlying operating profit stood at only ~€600 million. Such one-time gains mask persistent pressure on operating cash flow. 2. Cash flow: stark contrast—Dow’s healthy inflow vs. BASF’s mounting strain Dow generated $1.324 billion in operating cash flow in Q2—a sharp year-on-year turnaround. Higher prices translated directly into operating cash, supported by healthy inventory turnover. BASF’s operating cash flow plunged €1.1 billion year-on-year—primarily due to €654 million in additional working capital tied up in rising raw-material inventories and €843 million in extended accounts receivable. Upstream cost pressures and lengthening downstream payment terms have clearly weakened its operating cash-generating ability. BASF relied solely on the €5.6 billion net cash inflow from the coatings divestiture to improve investment-related metrics; its free cash flow turned negative. Daily operational funding pressure is markedly higher than Dow’s—reflecting a broader pain point among European chemical firms: rigidly high energy and feedstock costs, plus weaker working-capital efficiency compared to North American ethane-based producers. 3. Regional cost advantage: North American ethane route dominates European naphtha route The fundamental gap lies in feedstock cost structure: Dow’s core assets are concentrated in North America, where abundant, low-cost ethane provides a structural edge—exacerbated by recent Middle East geopolitical tensions that raised naphtha-cracker costs while expanding ethane-based margins. BASF’s core assets remain rooted in Europe, enduring triple pressure from high electricity prices, carbon taxes, and expensive naphtha. Even with product price hikes, its gross margin recovery lags behind North American peers. This regional cost gap directly shapes long-term industry structure: Global new chemical investment through 2026 continues shifting toward North America, Southeast Asia, and China’s integrated refining-chemical complexes—while European domestic capacity keeps exiting. This industrial relocation trend is irreversible. Three clear trends for the global polymer & plastics industry in 2026 Trend 1: Cyclical recovery is structural—not broad-based demand revival; geopolitical tailwinds are short-lived Whether Dow, BASF, or China’s private refining-chemical integrators, the core driver behind this round of soaring earnings is supply contraction-induced price increases—not an explosion in end-market demand.

Dow’s Q3 2025 Financial Report (October 27, 2025)

Its stock had languished for a full year—falling two tiers lower—before surging 13% following the Q3 2025 earnings release. Has there been any fundamental change? • First, revenue remains weak: the Q2 guidance for this quarter was $10.2 billion. • Second, GAAP EPS turned positive only due to two non-recurring items; operating profit failed to cover interest expenses. • On the bright side, the loss was narrower than expected—the company’s cost-cutting and capital-expenditure reduction initiatives have borne fruit. Then, has the chemical industry hit a downward inflection point? • On supply: Dow believes capacity discipline is emerging globally—including in China: “We’ve seen speculation about closures totaling roughly 13 million metric tons—comprising approximately 5 million tons of additional capacity in Asia, Japan, and Korea, and around 7 million tons in China driven by [anti-evolution] policies.” • On demand: Dow views overall demand as still weak—with no meaningful change versus last quarter. It hopes interest-rate cuts will stimulate construction starts.
