Surging 51-fold! BASF and Dow delivered a turnaround in their Q2 financial results—among global chemical companies pursuing ‘slimming down and upgrading quality,’ who stands out as the top performer?

【Answer 1】 Dow’s Q2 net profit of $802 million contained no non-recurring gains—such as asset disposals or government subsidies—and stemmed entirely from expanded polyethylene margin spreads and internal cost reductions. This reflects genuine improvement in core operating capabilities, rendering its profitability sustainable. In contrast, BASF’s €4.1 billion net income included €3.5 billion from the sale of its coatings business; excluding this one-time gain, its core operating profit amounted to only approximately €600 million—masking underlying pressure on operating cash flow. 2. A Tale of Two Cash Flows: Dow’s Smooth Cash Inflow vs. BASF’s Strained Operating Cash Flow Dow generated $1.324 billion in operating cash flow during Q2—a sharp year-on-year improvement and a clear turnaround. Higher selling prices directly translated into operating cash, and inventory turnover remained healthy. BASF’s operating cash flow, however, plunged by €1.1 billion year-on-year—primarily due to rising raw material costs, which increased inventory-related working capital requirements by €654 million and extended accounts receivable by €843 million year-on-year. Upstream cost pressures and lengthening downstream payment terms have significantly weakened its operational cash-generating capacity. BASF relied solely on the €5.6 billion net cash inflow from its coatings divestiture to improve investment-side metrics—its free cash flow turned negative. Consequently, pressure on day-to-day operational funding is markedly higher than at Dow—a pain point shared across European chemical firms: rigidly high energy and feedstock costs, coupled with weaker working capital efficiency compared to North American ethane-based producers. 3. Fundamental Regional Cost Divergence: North American Ethane Route Dominates European Naphtha Route The most fundamental disparity lies in feedstock cost structure: Dow’s core production capacity is concentrated in North America, where abundant and low-cost ethane provides a structural advantage—exacerbated by recent Middle Eastern geopolitical tensions that raised naphtha-cracking costs while further expanding ethane-based margins. BASF’s core assets are rooted in Europe, enduring persistent triple pressure from high electricity prices, high carbon taxes, and expensive naphtha. Even with product price increases, its gross margin recovery lags behind North American peers. This regional cost gap directly shapes long-term industry structure: Global new chemical investments through 2026 continue shifting toward integrated refining-and-chemical hubs in North America, Southeast Asia, and China—while European domestic capacity continues exiting the market. This industrial relocation trend is irreversible. Three Clear Trends for the Global Plastics & Chemicals Industry in 2026 Trend One: Cyclical Recovery Is Structural, Not Broad-Based Demand Rebound—Geopolitical Gains Are Short-Lived Whether Dow, BASF, or China’s private refining-and-chemical players, the primary driver behind this round of earnings surges is supply contraction-induced price hikes—not an explosion in end-demand. Dow’s overall Q2 sales volume declined 1% year-on-year, and packaging plastics volumes fell 4%; BASF saw only partial segment-level volume growth, with surface treatment technologies posting slight declines. As navigation through the Strait of Hormuz gradually normalizes, polyethylene prices in the Americas have already retreated since June. Dow’s management has warned that Q3 earnings will face downward pressure from scheduled plant maintenance and seasonal demand softness. The windfall profit window created by geopolitical conflict is inherently limited; medium- to long-term industry profitability will revert to fundamentals of supply and demand—with the pace of recovery in downstream consumption, real estate, and packaging demand ultimately determining the sector’s long-term ceiling. Trend Two: The Global Chemical Industry Has Entered the ‘Asset Restructuring Era’—Divestitures, Shutdowns, and Layoffs Have Become Routine Historically, companies weathered cyclical troughs by cutting output and scheduling maintenance. In 2026, global giants have uniformly shifted toward permanent asset optimization: divesting low-margin businesses, shuttering aging facilities, implementing large-scale layoffs, and slashing capital expenditures.

Dow’s Q3 2025 Financial Report (October 27, 2025)

【Answer 2】 Its stock price had languished for a full year—plummeting two tiers lower—yet surged 13% following the Q3 2025 earnings release. Has there been any meaningful change in fundamentals? ・ First, revenue remains weak: the Q2 guidance for this quarter stood at $10.2 billion. ・ Second, GAAP EPS turned positive only due to two non-recurring items; operating profit failed to cover interest expenses. ・ On the positive side, the loss was narrower than expected—the company’s cost-cutting and capital expenditure reduction initiatives have yielded tangible results. Has the chemical industry reached a downturn inflection point? ・ On the supply side, Dow believes capacity discipline is now taking hold across all major regions—including China: “We’ve seen speculation about closures totaling roughly 13 million metric tons—comprising approximately 5 million tons of additional capacity in Asia, Japan, and Korea, and around 7 million tons in China driven by [anti-evolution] policies.” ・ On the demand side, Dow views overall conditions as still weak—unchanged from last quarter—and hopes rate cuts will stimulate construction starts.
