Surging 51-fold! BASF and Dow deliver Q2 financial turnarounds—Who’s the top performer in global chemical industry’s ‘slimming-down and quality-upgrading’ drive?

In late July 2026, two global chemical and plastics industry leaders released their complete second-quarter financial reports: On July 23, Dow posted an extraordinary turnaround—from a $801 million net loss in Q2 2025 to a $802 million net profit in Q2 2026; on July 29, BASF reported a quarterly net income of €4.1 billion (compared to just €79 million in Q2 2025), representing a 51-fold year-on-year surge, and raised its full-year earnings guidance. Both companies operate across North America and Europe and cover the full spectrum—from polyolefins and materials to coatings and fine chemicals. Their profits rebounded sharply in tandem, yet diverged markedly in terms of profit drivers, cash flow structure, and asset management strategies. Concurrently, major Chinese private-sector refining-and-petrochemical firms—including Orient Holdings, Rongsheng Petrochemical, and Hengyi Petrochemical—issued half-year profit forecasts showing explosive growth across the board. Thus, the industry-wide profitability recovery in global plastics and petrochemicals for Q2 2026 has become a consensus view. This article analyzes both companies’ complete financial reports, comparing commonalities and core differences to unpack the underlying logic driving this market rally. Comprehensive Comparison of Key Q2 Performance Metrics for Both Giants (I) Dow Chemical: Realization of Polyolefin Cycle Benefits, Full Recovery of Core Operating Profits Dow’s Q2 2026 net sales totaled $12.092 billion, up 20% year-on-year; average product prices rose 20% overall, with exchange-rate effects adding another 1% to revenue, while volumes declined only slightly by 1%. The contrast in profitability was striking: a $801 million net loss in Q2 2025 versus an $802 million net profit in Q2 2026; operating EBIT reached $1.648 billion, compared to a $21 million loss in Q2 2025—an approximate 230% year-on-year increase. By segment, Packaging & Specialty Plastics (Dow’s core polyethylene business) served as the profit pillar, contributing a $1.229 billion year-on-year EBIT increase; Industrial Intermediates also saw synchronized gross margin recovery; only the Performance Materials segment posted a modest profit decline due to scheduled major plant overhauls. From a cash flow perspective, operating cash flow stood at $1.324 billion in Q2 2026—versus a $470 million net outflow in Q2 2025—demonstrating that pricing gains were fully converted into operating cash. During the quarter, Dow accrued $503 million in restructuring expenses, supporting implementation of its ‘Transform to Outperform’ cost-reduction strategy. (II) BASF Group: Steady Core Growth + One-Time Gains from Asset Divestitures BASF’s Q2 2026 sales amounted to €17.2 billion, up €2.4 billion (+16.4% year-on-year); price increases contributed +11.5%, volume growth added +7.3%, while exchange-rate effects exerted only minor negative pressure per preliminary commercial reporting. EBITDA excluding special items totaled €2.4 billion—up €854 million year-on-year—with significant profit improvements across its Materials, Chemicals, and Industrial Solutions segments. The leapfrog growth in profitability stemmed primarily from one-time asset disposal gains: the sale of its Coatings business to Carlyle Group generated a post-tax gain of €3.5 billion, propelling the quarter’s post-tax income to €4.2 billion and net income to €4.1 billion—up from just €79 million in Q2 2025.

A major shift in direction! Dow and Celanese adjust global capacity layouts—Asia emerges as the new growth hub.

This year, under mounting pressures—including high energy costs, intensifying market competition, and supply-chain volatility—the global chemical industry has continued deep strategic realignment. Recently, Dow Chemical and Celanese—two leading international chemical companies—successively implemented workforce reductions, plant closures, and capacity relocations, proactively scaling back inefficient, high-cost operations in Europe and South Korea, while simultaneously deepening investments in Asia’s high-potential markets. A global reshaping of the chemical industry landscape is now well underway. European Operations Under Pressure, Dow Intensifies Cost-Cutting and Boosts China Investment On June 3, Dow Chemical announced the layoff of 605 employees in the Netherlands—a key measure under its ‘Transform to Outperform’ cost-efficiency initiative. Dow operates three major production bases in the Netherlands, each with clearly defined roles and substantial scale: The Terneuzen site—Dow’s largest manufacturing facility outside the U.S.—hosts 16 plants and approximately 3,200 employees, producing nearly 800 industrial chemical and plastic products; the Delfzijl site, with over 50 years of operational history, is the world’s largest isocyanate production base; and the Dordrecht site specializes in specialty plastics for medical and food applications, with multiple products widely used in packaging and composite adhesives. Persistent losses have been the primary driver behind Dow’s repeated workforce and capacity optimizations. In recent years, Dow has launched multiple global cost-cutting initiatives: two large-scale rounds of layoffs in 2023 and 2025, and—in January 2026—a comprehensive restructuring plan targeting 4,500 global job cuts and aiming to generate $2 billion in additional annual operating profit. Financial data shows Dow incurred a full-year net loss exceeding $2.4 billion in 2025, and in Q1 2026, its revenue declined 6% year-on-year, with a single-quarter net loss of $445 million—signaling rapidly escalating operational pressure. Meanwhile, geopolitical factors have disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, constraining nearly half of global ethylene and polyethylene supply; raw material shortages and rising prices are expected to persist throughout 2026. While scaling back European operations, Dow continues to ramp up investment in China. In April 2026, Dow Silicones (Zhangjiagang) officially broke ground on its expansion project for silicone polymers—adding 2,500 tons/year of capacity. The Zhangjiagang site already hosts mature production lines for alcohol ethers, polyether polyols, siloxanes, and fumed silica, and is further developing downstream products including silicone resins, liquid silicone rubber, and sealants—forming a complete industrial chain and serving as a pivotal production hub for Dow in China. At the leadership level, Karen S. Carter, Dow’s Chief Operating Officer, will assume the role of CEO and join the Board of Directors effective July 1, overseeing the execution of Dow’s next strategic phase. Major Capacity Layout Adjustment, Celanese Shifts Focus to China and India Following closely on Dow’s move, specialty materials company Celanese announced on June 4 the immediate closure of its engineering plastics compounding plant in Ulsan, South Korea, relocating all local capacity to its Nanjing and Shenzhen facilities in China and its Silvassa facility in India.
