It is widely recognized that a company’s lifecycle is closely tied to its strategy. During corporate development, three key concepts are central: focus, expansion, and repositioning. Strategy and corporate growth must be mutually adaptive. Launching the right competitive solutions and products—timely, in the right place, and aligned with customers’ strategic needs—enables companies to address pain points encountered during customers’ development and thereby build competitive advantage. Over its more than 200-year history, DuPont has continuously adjusted its development strategy to adapt to changing external environments. At critical junctures—deciding what to do and what not to do—DuPont has delivered astonishing results. Although its global positioning and brand image have continually evolved, DuPont has consistently maintained sustainable vitality. In 2003, DuPont launched its ‘New DuPont’ strategy, centered on ‘customer- and market-driven business growth and productivity improvement.’ By restructuring internal operations and fully leveraging and strengthening infrastructure, DuPont enhanced its ability to serve customers worldwide. Capitalizing on its global scale and reach, DuPont achieved success across diverse markets and advanced its sustainability goals. The new operational strategy emphasized deploying unique technological intelligence to select high-demand products and aggressively expand into international markets; strengthening core traditional product lines while developing new product categories to capture substantial profits. In 2003, to further strengthen its competitiveness in global markets, DuPont introduced the ‘New DuPont’ strategy, focused on ‘customer- and market-driven business growth and productivity improvement.’ Through integrating internal structures and fully utilizing and reinforcing infrastructure, DuPont’s business units became more customer-centric globally, mobilizing DuPont’s global scale and advantages to achieve an annual revenue increase of $1 billion, secure market success across regions, and realize sustainable development. The Chinese market was designated as one of the strategic priorities under the ‘New DuPont’ initiative, presenting greater growth opportunities and attracting increased corporate resource investment. DuPont’s current three strategic pillars are: Agriculture & Food, Bio-based Materials, and Advanced Materials. In agriculture and food, DuPont expands its leadership position through a science-driven food value chain in agriculture; in bio-based materials, it builds transformative new businesses grounded in its world-leading biotechnology capabilities; in advanced materials, it leverages its leadership to reinforce and grow its dominant position in high-value material businesses. By extending downstream along the value chain, DuPont consistently occupies the high-value-added apex of the industry chain. The underlying reason lies in DuPont’s ability to ‘adapt dynamically’ rather than ‘stagnate rigidly’—a distinctive capacity to respond flexibly to changing circumstances. This capability rests upon DuPont’s forward-looking strategic vision and decisive leadership. DuPont pursues diversification through a dual emphasis on acquisitions and R&D, extends vertically both upstream and downstream, and implements an integrated production and operation strategy encompassing energy and resources. DuPont exited the basic polymer products market while expanding existing and launching new, polymer-based, high-value-added end products—and retaining previously market-leading product lines. While preserving its leading edge in traditional functional materials, DuPont shifted its strategic focus toward agricultural nutrition and bioengineering sciences. Leveraging its formidable R&D capacity and deep domain expertise accumulated over decades, DuPont defined its strategic boundaries for the new era.

The DuPont Family (Part I)

Most indigenous family-owned enterprises in China currently operate under a single-founder decision-making model and commonly face a ‘second-generation succession dilemma’: founding-generation leaders are either unwilling or unable to delegate authority, while second-generation successors are either unwilling or unprepared to assume leadership. Moreover, many families also confront internal conflicts. The DuPont family offers a key insight: family governance frameworks must be established at least twenty years before intergenerational succession. The DuPont and Rockefeller families share many similarities: both dominated national-strategic industries—Rockefeller in oil, DuPont initially in gunpowder via U.S. government contracts. Neither were ordinary businessmen but rather architects and controllers of national industrial infrastructure. Consequently, both faced antitrust actions that curtailed their dominance, after which both established family trusts. A key difference emerged, however, in their post-antitrust transitions from industrial peaks to financialization: the Rockefellers remained largely anchored within the ‘oil’ category, whereas the DuPonts continuously expanded their industrial boundaries. The Rockefellers chose to deploy wealth generated from oil through trusts and foundations for diversified financial investments—i.e., financial management of existing wealth. By contrast, the DuPonts reinvested earnings from prior industrial cycles into R&D or acquisitions for the next cycle—i.e., financial incubation of new, incremental wealth. From gunpowder to chemicals, synthetic fibers, and bio-materials, the DuPont family’s core competency has never been fixation on a single market, but rather the continual creation of new markets through its ‘laboratory.’ Beyond its succession wisdom, the DuPont family’s contributions to innovation are equally remarkable and worthy of serious study. The DuPont family embedded innovation into the company’s DNA. Though hyperbolic, the label ‘DuPont—the most successful innovative industrial dynasty of the 20th century’ is not far-fetched. Over a century, DuPont transformed innovation—from an occasional act by individual scientists—into a systematic, institutionalized corporate capability. A popular quip in chemical circles goes: ‘Half the materials defining modern human life were invented by DuPont.’ In 1903, the three DuPont brothers built America’s first industrial scientific research station on the Brandywine River—a decision considered wildly audacious at the time. Yet this very station laid the foundation for systematic research. In 1927, DuPont launched foundational research programs in physics, organic chemistry, and chemical engineering based on that station. In 1957, it formally named its Chemical Division’s research organization the Central Research Department (CRD), completing its institutional evolution from a research station to a modern central research institute. If the 1903 station was DuPont’s heart, then by 1957, that heart had acquired a modern, standardized rhythm. The DuPont family allocates approximately 4% of the company’s annual revenue to R&D funding. It also permits researchers to dedicate up to 30% of R&D resources to exploratory, frontier research without short-term commercial objectives—granting scientists exceptional autonomy and intellectual space.
