Bio-methane: A New Frontier for Clean Energy?

Bio-methane—also known as biomethane or renewable natural gas—is primarily produced through anaerobic digestion of organic feedstocks such as food waste, crop residues, municipal solid waste, and livestock manure. Its properties are virtually identical to those of conventional natural gas, enabling direct injection into existing natural gas grids without altering current oil-and-gas utilization infrastructure. Globally, bio-methane is widely recognized as a low-carbon, flexible new energy source: it can serve as a substitute for traditional fossil fuels, offer potential solutions for waste-to-energy generation, and significantly advance the circular economy. Advances in Bio-methane Exploration and Utilization Across Multiple Countries Currently, numerous countries and regions worldwide have made notable progress in exploring and utilizing bio-methane. In North America, policy incentives have spurred a sharp rise in bio-methane development projects—from 162 in 2020 to nearly 500 in 2024—with 70% of output derived from municipal solid waste. In Europe, geopolitical conflicts catalyzed accelerated renewable energy development under the REPowerEU initiative; bio-methane production in 2023 increased by approximately 35% year-on-year compared to 2022, with feedstocks mainly comprising livestock manure and agricultural residues. According to Wood Mackenzie, a leading energy consultancy, global bio-methane production is projected to surge to 74 billion cubic meters (bcm) by 2050—accounting for roughly 2% of total global natural gas demand or 10% of global liquefied natural gas (LNG) demand. Under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, policy support for bio-methane and related industries has been substantially expanded. The U.S. aims to increase its bio-methane output from 4.7 bcm in 2023 to 37.6 bcm by 2050—raising its share of domestic natural gas consumption from 0.4% to 4.3%. The United Kingdom and Denmark likewise plan to scale up their bio-methane production from 0.9 bcm and 0.7 bcm in 2023 to 2.4 bcm and 1.4 bcm, respectively, by 2050. According to the European Biogas Association (EBA), the global bio-methane market—valued at USD 1.634 billion in 2023—is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.7% between 2023 and 2028. From a raw-materials security perspective, current U.S. bio-methane production consumes less than 10% of the nation’s annual landfill gas resource potential—estimated at 40 bcm—excluding other abundant feedstocks such as livestock manure and food waste. Europe and Brazil are projected to achieve bio-methane resource potentials of 150 bcm/year and 44 bcm/year, respectively, by 2050. Australia, Malaysia, India, Indonesia, and China also possess strong resource endowments and development potential for bio-methane. In short, most regions worldwide possess both the resource base and developmental potential to scale up bio-methane production. International Oil Companies Move Early Given bio-methane’s low-carbon, renewable attributes—and its seamless integration into existing natural gas value chains—several international oil companies have already begun entering this space. In 2022, bp acquired Archaea Energy for USD 4 billion, becoming the largest bio-methane producer in the United States, with 50 production facilities and 80 associated projects.

Lessons from Abroad—Europe to Produce 111 Billion Cubic Meters of Bio-natural Gas by 2040

Recently, the European Biogas Association (EBA) released its 2040 biogas outlook report, titled 'Biogases towards 2040 and beyond'. This report updates the 2022 Gas Climate Study, incorporating the latest data and insights to revise estimates of biogas potential for 2030 and 2050—and shifts focus toward 2040 to provide a realistic assessment of how Europe’s biomethane production potential will continue evolving. The updated estimates indicate that Europe will produce up to 44 bcm of biomethane by 2030 and 165 bcm by 2050 (of which the EU-27 will contribute 40 bcm in 2030 and 150 bcm in 2050). Given that underlying methodologies and key assumptions remain unchanged, the estimated biomethane production potential in this study remains broadly consistent with that of the 2022 Gas Climate Study. By 2040, Europe is projected to produce 111 bcm of biomethane—of which 101 bcm will be attributable to the EU-27. This potential comprises 74 bcm (67% of the total) generated via anaerobic fermentation and 37 bcm (33% of the total) produced via pyrolysis gasification.
