Recently, Électricité de France (EDF) and Centrica have been negotiating with the UK government regarding the life extension of the Sizewell B nuclear power station. According to insiders at EDF, the company plans to invest approximately £800 million to extend Sizewell B’s operational life from 2035 to 2055. As of 2025, the plant will have been in operation for 30 years. In its nuclear asset renewal report, EDF states that extending Sizewell B’s operation from 2035 to 2055 is technically feasible—and similar extensions have already been implemented globally for comparable nuclear plants. The company is currently negotiating with the UK government to establish a long-term electricity pricing mechanism to secure financing for this life-extension project. Extending nuclear plant lifespans is not unique to the UK—it has become a global trend. The United States leads in both scale and concentration. As of end-2025, the U.S. operates over 90 nuclear reactors, of which more than 80 have received regulatory approval to extend operations to 60 years; some have even secured approval—or are undergoing review—for extensions up to 80 years. For example, Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant—the last remaining nuclear facility in California—has received federal regulatory approval for a 20-year life extension, pushing its operational horizon to around 2045. Vistra Energy, a major U.S. power company, recently completed life extension for its entire nuclear fleet—including Perry—by January 2026, ensuring all six units operate for at least 60 years. Backed by technology giants, Vistra announced long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Meta, each spanning 20 years and collectively covering over 3.8 GW of nuclear capacity. The company stated these long-term contracts will support applications for additional license renewals, targeting extended operation of select units into the 2050s and 2060s. In nuclear powerhouse France, 20 reactors of 1,300 MW capacity were approved for life extension to 50 years in 2025, with evaluations ongoing in 2026 for possible extensions beyond 60 years. Sweden is studying the feasibility of extending certain units from 60 to 80 years. Even Japan—still grappling with the aftermath of the Fukushima accident—is revising its laws to permit operation beyond 60 years under policy guidelines. Though its immediate focus in 2026 remains reactor restarts rather than widespread new life-extension approvals, several units are actively developing long-term facility management plans. What triggered the shift—from early retirement to life extension? The primary driver is the arrival of a global era of power shortages. For decades, developed nations experienced persistently low electricity demand growth. For instance, many European countries saw virtually no growth in electricity demand over the past 10–15 years; U.S. electricity demand growth has long remained below 1% annually; and Japan’s electricity demand has stayed depressed since the Fukushima accident.
