What is the significance of Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao's meeting with EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic on June 29, and how does it relate to recent EU directives on trade with China?

The meeting on June 29 between Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic is a direct response to recent EU leaders' instruction for the European Commission to 'produce results from dialogue with the EU's main trading partners, including China' and to ensure the bloc 'has all the trade instruments it needs to defend its interests.' This high-level engagement occurs amid mounting EU concerns over trade imbalances and strategic dependencies, as underscored by the Commission’s plan to propose a law requiring EU companies to diversify sources of key supplies. The timing reflects an urgent effort to recalibrate the EU-China trade relationship through diplomacy while preparing regulatory tools to mitigate economic vulnerabilities.

How has China's goods trade surplus with the EU evolved recently, and what does the April 2025 rare earth export restriction reveal about Beijing's trade strategy?

China's goods trade surplus with the EU reached €360.6 billion in 2025 — a 15% increase from 2024 — and expanded further by 10% in the first four months of 2025, driven by rising Chinese exports to the EU and declining Chinese imports from the bloc. Simultaneously, Beijing imposed export restrictions on rare earths in April 2025, leveraging its dominance in processing critical minerals; this move was explicitly framed as a response to U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs but also adversely affected EU companies, revealing a broader strategic use of supply-chain leverage in geopolitical trade disputes.
