(Source: Business Wire) 12 EU’s first commercial-scale CO₂ storage facility commences operations On September 18, the European Union’s first full-scale commercial carbon dioxide (CO₂) storage facility officially began operations—marking a significant milestone in Europe’s decarbonization infrastructure development. Named “Greensand,” the project is located at the Port of Esbjerg and is led by INEOS Energy, in partnership with Harbour Energy and the Danish North Sea Fund (Nordsøfonden). It has now transitioned from the demonstration testing phase into full commercial operation. In its initial phase, the Greensand project can inject and permanently store up to 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. As regional industrial carbon capture projects come online, INEOS plans to scale total operational capacity to between 4 million and 8 million tonnes per year. The project will source biogenic CO₂ from Danish biomethane plants. Current status and development trends of Denmark’s biogas industry

In recent years, Europe’s biogas and biomethane sectors have gained increasing attention due to climate mitigation goals and energy security concerns. Denmark’s rapid progress in this area stands out—largely attributable to its supportive subsidy policies, which have enhanced the sector’s profitability. The price ceiling for biomethane—including subsidies—is set at DKK 120/GJ (€58/MWh). Assuming a calorific value of 10 kWh per cubic meter of biomethane, the maximum grid-injection price for biomethane amounts to approximately €0.58/m³ (roughly RMB 4.4/m³). In 2022, around 80% of Denmark’s biogas was upgraded to biomethane and injected into the national natural gas grid. The Danish government forecasts that, by 2030, biogas will account for 70% of the country’s natural gas consumption. Basic information about Denmark’s current status can be found in the report published in September 2024 by IEA Bioenergy Task 37, representing its member countries. In Denmark, anaerobic digestion for biogas production is a mature renewable energy technology, making substantial contributions both to the share of renewables in Denmark’s overall energy consumption and to nationwide greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions. Most biogas produced in Denmark is upgraded to biomethane—matching natural gas in quality—and fed into the national natural gas grid, gradually replacing fossil natural gas in Denmark’s energy mix. Biogas plays an overarching role in Denmark’s energy supply system: balancing wind-dominated electricity generation and serving as an important, economically viable tool within the “green energy transition” to mitigate climate change and reduce CO₂ and other GHG emissions across the energy, transport, and agricultural sectors. 1. Biogas and biomethane production In 2020, Denmark operated 180 biogas plants, producing nearly 7.3 TWh annually (Table 1-1). Agricultural biogas plants accounted for 91% of Denmark’s total biogas output. Recent data indicate that Denmark’s biogas and biomethane production has grown to 7.5 TWh (Figure 1-1). The majority of biogas is upgraded to biomethane (with methane content of 97–99%) and injected into the natural gas grid. More than half (26 plants, or 56%) employ chemical scrubbing technology. According to a report prepared by the University of Southern Denmark for the Danish Energy Agency, the total bioresource potential—including livestock manure and fermentable organic waste from households, industry, and agriculture—stands at 26 TWh. Based on estimates from the Danish Energy Agency and the Danish Biogas Association (Biogas Danmark), biogas production is projected to reach 14–15 TWh by 2030 and 17 TWh by 2035.
