This isn’t fence-sitting—it’s professional integrity. If you believe an unattributed “allegation” today, tomorrow you’ll rage over something that never happened. And anger? It’s the world’s easiest emotion to harvest. There’s another line in that same maritime zone. Over the past five days, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy has taken action against at least seven “violating” tankers in the Strait of Hormuz—multiple sources report an average of more than one vessel targeted daily. On October 1, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a tanker caught fire after being struck by an unidentified flying object while transiting the strait. Meanwhile, on October 2, the French Presidency (Élysée Palace) issued a statement announcing that the G7, coordinated through the IEA, would release 100 million barrels of strategic petroleum reserves—immediately launching the program for four months, with the first 20 days prioritizing large-scale diesel releases. The IEA itself stated that roughly 325 million barrels have already been released under its March-announced 400-million-barrel plan. My judgment: the Strait will neither be fully closed nor fully open. It will remain in a state of “semi-restriction”—the most cost-effective card in Tehran’s hand. A full closure equals war; full openness equals surrender; semi-restriction is a negotiable bargaining chip—one whose value can be renegotiated daily. Some call the Strait of Hormuz the “global economy’s throat.” I disagree—it’s too fragile for that metaphor. Long-term oil price stability, however, depends on restoring both shipping access and refining capacity. Got it? Reserve releases are painkillers—not scalpels.
