The mine produces low-ash, low-sulfur bituminous coal. Spanning over 690 km², it ranks among the world’s largest mines of its kind, is Latin America’s biggest open-pit coal mine, and ranks as the world’s tenth-largest mine. Coal seam thickness ranges from 0.7 m to 10 m. The coalfield comprises three zones—north, central, and south—with the northern zone being the largest. Total proven reserves are estimated at 503 million tonnes. In 2016, the mine’s output was approximately 32.7 million tonnes. In June 2020, lawyers representing the local Wayuu communities petitioned the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights and the Environment, urging an immediate halt to operations due to environmental and human rights concerns. In September 2020, several UN independent human rights experts called for a temporary suspension of mining activities, citing severe environmental damage caused by coal dust and water pollution—and their adverse impacts on the health and other rights of Indigenous peoples residing in the area. El Cerrejón has become a focal point for Colombia’s president, who accuses open-pit mining of plunging local Indigenous communities into a severe water crisis.
