General Motors: The Logic of the Contrarian

When the old formula has ceased to work—a consensus across the industry—the key to General Motors’ counter-cyclical profitability lies in its strategic 'giving up' and 'gaining'. On one hand, GM has proactively withdrawn from low-value markets where competition yields little return. Financial reports show that, through business restructuring and product portfolio optimization, GM’s operational resilience in China is becoming evident. This strategy—'not judging success solely by sales volume'—concentrates resources on high-value niche segments. In the first half of the year, SAIC-GM’s new energy vehicle (NEV) sales reached nearly 50,000 units, up 81.1% year-on-year. Against the backdrop of a shrinking ICE vehicle base, this robust NEV growth has effectively filled the profit gap. On the other hand, cost control and deep integration with the local supply chain are beginning to bear fruit. Mary Barra, GM’s Chair and CEO, stated at the earnings call that the company’s solid performance stems from both the appeal of its product lineup and improved cost efficiency. Notably, with the localization of technologies such as the 'Xiaoyao' Super Integrated Architecture, development cycles and material costs for GM vehicles in China have been further optimized. This 'giving up and gaining' is most thoroughly embodied in the Buick Zhijing E7. Internally, GM acknowledges that the E7’s market response far exceeds that of its Ultium-platform models in North America. Even more significantly, the direction of technological flow has reversed: GM plans to export the E7 to South Korea, and the next-generation Cadillac Optiq will adopt a platform developed by its Chinese team. Chevrolet is currently undergoing strategic retrenchment: its retail sales in the first half of 2026 totaled fewer than 100 units. GM has shifted all resource focus to Buick and Cadillac. Notably, since April, this former joint-venture heavyweight has slid into a four-month consecutive decline: down 17.3% in April, 22.07% in May, 18.24% in June, and again 17.7% in July. SAIC-GM Let’s crunch the numbers first. According to SAIC Motor’s official production and sales report released on August 2, in July 2026, SAIC-GM Automobile Co., Ltd. produced 32,458 vehicles—down 12.34% year-on-year—and sold 34,773 units—down 17.70% year-on-year. From January to July, cumulative production was 263,758 units (down 12.19% YoY), and cumulative sales were 265,927 units (down 7.45% YoY). But horizontal comparisons tell an even more intriguing story. In July, SAIC Passenger Vehicle sold 106,808 units—up a staggering 78.21% YoY; SAIC-GM Wuling sold 108,307 units; and IM Motors sold 5,900 units—up 1.57% YoY. The group’s overall 0.32% YoY sales growth was entirely driven by its homegrown brands, which literally plugged the joint-venture’s deficit. Sales The timeline deserves closer scrutiny. SAIC-GM’s downward spiral began in April: 34,793 units sold (−17.3% YoY); 36,625 units in May (−22.07%); 38,430 units in June (−18.24%). Four straight months of year-on-year declines. Yet Cheyutianxia (a Chinese automotive media outlet) found that in the first half of 2026, SAIC-GM’s production decline (−12.17%) outpaced its sales decline (−5.68%). What does this imply? Perhaps deliberate production cuts—not passive inventory buildup. Is the company intentionally scaling back operations, clearing stockpiles, and freeing up capacity and resources for upcoming new models? That remains worth watching. Looking back at 2025 data: SAIC-GM sold 535,000 vehicles for the full year—up nearly 23% YoY—and achieved profitability for five consecutive quarters. Clearly, this enterprise still possesses strong fundamentals. Zhijing L7 Personnel changes have already taken effect. As of press time, SAIC-GM has not issued any official public statement addressing its four-month streak of declining sales. What truly warrants attention is the leadership reshuffle announced on July 28. Lu Xiao has been appointed General Manager of SAIC Passenger Vehicle, while Xu Ping succeeds him as General Manager of SAIC-GM. Lu Xiao assumed his role in August 2024 amid mounting challenges and served for roughly two years, delivering several major achievements: — Fully devolving product definition authority to China-based teams; — Actively reducing inventory by over 200,000 units; — Launching the 'Xiaoyao' Super Integrated Architecture, led by local teams. In 2025, results were immediate: five consecutive profitable quarters may well be the strongest possible endorsement. Zhijing E7 Xu Ping, the incoming leader, also hails from the Pan-Asia Technical Center. He joined in 1998 and has held roles including Deputy Director of Powertrain and Executive Director of Project Management. His tenure at Huayu Automotive Systems—focused on supply chain management and overseas business expansion—may provide precisely the two sharp tools SAIC-GM needs most right now.
