Why does Donald Trump want Greenland?

The United States has long been engaged in prospecting for Greenland’s mineral resources—but such economic activity requires political, or even military, backing. Without the support of U.S. military power, American mining companies operating in Greenland could not act 'freely.' For example, KoBold Metals—a supplier of raw materials for the artificial intelligence industry backed by figures such as Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos—uses AI technology to locate and extract rare-earth minerals. Its proprietary big-data algorithms analyze geological survey data and other publicly available information provided by governments to identify key mineral deposits. The company currently holds a 51% stake in the Disko-Nuussuaq mining project and is exploring for copper and other minerals in that region. In its most recent funding round, KoBold Metals raised $537 million, bringing its valuation close to $3 billion. Investors include a venture capital firm founded by Marc Andreessen[1]; as a Trump ally, Andreessen has also invested in Praxis Nation—an anarcho-capitalist experimental jurisdiction. Andreessen’s funding originates from Pronomos Capital—a venture capital group founded by Milton Friedman’s grandson and backed by figures including Peter Thiel. Pronomos aims to establish charter cities friendly to private enterprise—places where investors can draft their own laws and regulations, effectively functioning as alternative colonial trading enclaves. Ken Howery, the U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, is also part of Thiel’s circle: he advocates for U.S. annexation of Greenland from a traditional geopolitical perspective, while simultaneously scouting sites for experimental, self-governing communities built around libertarian ideals and technologies like cryptocurrency. Thus, America’s high-tech monopoly bourgeoisie clearly possess strong incentives to back such diplomatic coercion. Yet the catalyst drawing them in emerged only after a prolonged period shaped by multiple interlocking factors. As a result of Denmark’s colonial administrative integration, Greenland gained home rule in 1979—detaching itself from direct Danish provincial administration—yet Denmark retained control over foreign affairs and defense, and continued permitting the U.S. to build and operate military bases there. In a 2008 referendum, Greenlanders voted for greater autonomy, enabling them to manage their natural resources and assume other sovereign functions. That same year, the U.S. Geological Survey identified Greenland as holding one of the world’s largest potential reserves of oil and gas. Updated estimates suggest the Arctic may contain roughly 13% of the world’s undiscovered oil and 30% of its undiscovered natural gas. This report attracted major oil companies—including ConocoPhillips, Chevron, and BP—which began acquiring exploration licenses and conducting surveys off Greenland’s coast and on its territory. However, this development drive was suspended as the 2008 global financial crisis spread. In 2013, Greenland’s left-wing, pro-independence Siumut (Forward) Party came to power. Pursuing an independent, developmentalist path to strengthen the island’s economy, it actively sought foreign investment to exploit local mineral resources.

Greenland: Why has the U.S. coveted it for so many years?

First, geography. Greenland sits squarely at the crossroads between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. During World War II, after Nazi Germany occupied Denmark, the U.S. feared German naval forces might use Greenland as a springboard to sever North Atlantic shipping lanes. In April 1941, Henrik Kauffmann—the Danish envoy to the U.S.—signed a protection agreement with Washington without consulting the German-occupied Danish government in Copenhagen. U.S. troops then landed on the island. When the Danish government learned of this, it dismissed and prosecuted Kauffmann—but after the war ended, it found that American forces had already built meteorological stations, radio facilities, and patrol networks across Greenland, turning the island into a cornerstone of Nordic defense. Denmark never forgot this episode. Second, the 1946 offer. U.S. Secretary of State James F. Byrnes formally offered Denmark $100 million in gold bullion to purchase Greenland. Denmark flatly refused, stating plainly: 'This island cannot be sold.' The U.S. did not resort to coercion; instead, it changed tactics. In 1951, the two countries signed a defense agreement allowing the U.S. to establish Thule Air Base—today’s Pituffik Space Base—the northernmost U.S. military installation on Earth, located about 1,200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle and roughly 1,500 kilometers from the North Pole. Its radar faces northward; its missile-warning systems monitor the skies. Most ballistic missiles launched from the continental U.S. toward the Arctic would pass through this airspace. During the Cold War’s most tense years, Soviet aircraft flying over the North Pole to strike North America had to traverse this corridor—and Thule’s radar served as North America’s eyes. Today, the base remains under U.S. control and has operated continuously for over seventy years. Though the 1946 purchase failed, the U.S. secured functional access in 1951: 'No need to buy the island—just make sure you can use it.' Third, recent developments. Rapid Arctic ice melt in recent years has extended the navigable window of the Arctic shipping route each summer. A cargo ship sailing from Shanghai to Rotterdam via the Suez Canal travels over 19,000 kilometers; taking the Arctic route cuts nearly 5,000 kilometers. Greenland lies precisely at the exit of the Northwest Passage. As the ice recedes, Greenland ceases to be a remote periphery—it becomes a strategic crossroads. Fourth, what lies beneath the surface. Greenland holds approximately 38.5 million tons of rare-earth oxides—roughly one-quarter of the world’s proven reserves. In recent years, the U.S. has added critical minerals to its supply-chain security list, and Greenland’s Kvanefjeld rare-earth deposit has repeatedly drawn attention. Since China dominates global rare-earth processing, the U.S. seeks alternative sources—and Greenland stands among the few viable options. Mining sounds simple in theory but proves difficult in practice: Greenland lacks ports capable of accommodating large container ships; it has no integrated power grid; and all mining equipment must be shipped piece by piece. High costs have deterred several Australian and Canadian mining firms—after preliminary assessments, they withdrew. The ore is real—but the infrastructure remains undeveloped. Beyond rare earths, Greenland also possesses uranium. In 2013, Greenland’s parliament lifted its ban on exporting radioactive minerals, attracting interest from multiple mining firms. But in 2021, the same parliament enacted legislation banning uranium mining—halting several major rare-earth projects, since rare-earth deposits commonly co-occur with uranium. Banning uranium effectively froze rare-earth development too. Whether or when this ban will be relaxed—and how—remains uncertain. The resources are undeniably there; yet the keys remain firmly in the hands of Greenland’s parliament in Nuuk. Lay these four accounts side by side, and you understand why Trump loudly advocated buying Greenland during his first term—and why, upon returning to office last year, he pressured Denmark with threats of tariffs and even hinted at the possibility of military action.
