They simply didn’t care! They bought up all the shares being sold. And short sellers eventually had to cover their positions—i.e., repurchase shares to return them. From whom? From Vanderbilt. So, the most critical factor in this case was simply that Vanderbilt’s faction possessed truly vast financial resources… Regarding the railway issue you raised: holding operating rights over a railway line implies revenue generation, the ability to issue bonds, and access to financing—all highly positive developments for a railway company! Thus, securing railway operating rights naturally exerted significant upward pressure on Harlem Railroad’s stock price.
