Will high oil prices cause demand destruction for crude oil in 2026?

Additionally, a short-term disruption emerged: Hurricane Isaias formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico on October 7 and officially intensified into the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season on October 8. As of noon on October 8, production shutdowns had surged to 1.283 million barrels per day—62.89% of current daily output—while natural gas shutdowns reached 1.127 billion cubic feet per day, or 57.35% of current output. IV. Counterbalancing Force: The IEA’s 1.1-Billion-Barrel Arsenal In the face of supply disruptions, the sole countermeasure is strategic reserve releases.
