The impact is minimal—but the insult is profound. The official rationale is that imported foods from countries like China fail to meet India’s food safety and quality standards. Reasons for rejection include safety risks, health hazards, non-compliant labeling, and incomplete documentation. Safety risks encompass contamination by pests or heavy metals; health hazards involve parameters such as moisture content and fat levels. India’s domestic food safety situation is abysmal—yet it imposes stringent standards on others. This appears excessive—and likely performative: aimed at domestic audiences. A survey by an Indian research institution on food safety found that among over 12,300 respondents across 293 districts: • 36% expressed "absolutely no confidence"; • 37% reported "insufficient confidence" in India’s food regulatory authorities. Clearly, the government seeks to demonstrate action—and fulfill its promises to the public. Many Indian media outlets frame the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s (FSSAI) measures as a firm commitment to upholding rigorous quality standards for imported food, thereby safeguarding Indians’ health and safety. So what’s wrong with Chinese food? It boils down to just one non-alcoholic beer—found to exceed pH limits—and then subjected to baseless accusations and disproportionate amplification. This, however, is only the surface motive. A deeper driver may parallel Trump’s tariff policies: invoking drugs and crime as pretexts—while pursuing broader strategic goals. India’s underlying issue lies in its long-standing "unilateralism." Recently, Chinese smartphone maker Vivo executed a strategic exit from India; had it failed to do so, it might well have faced a classic “pig-butchering” scheme. Google, Amazon, Nokia, and Samsung have all incurred multi-billion-dollar penalty fines in India. OPPO and Vivo, too, have stumbled in the Indian market.

How does India’s rising obesity rate affect its future?

India’s obesity burden is staggering. According to the World Obesity Federation’s Global Obesity Observatory, the economic cost attributable to overweight and obesity in India was estimated at USD 28.95 billion in 2019—equivalent to 1% of GDP. Yet if current trends persist, this figure is projected to surge to USD 838.6 billion by 2060—accounting for 2.5% of GDP. The Economic Survey 2023–24, released last July, warned that unless Indians adopt healthier lifestyles—including regular physical activity—India will forfeit its demographic dividend. The Survey states: “If India is to reap its demographic dividend, a shift toward balanced and diversified diets across its population is essential.” It identifies obesity as a primary health challenge. “Obesity is emerging as a serious problem among India’s adult population. According to the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5), the prevalence of obesity among men aged 18–69 rose from 18.9% in NFHS-4 to 22.9% in NFHS-5. Among women in the same age group, obesity prevalence increased from 20.6% (NFHS-4) to 24.0% (NFHS-5).” Physical inactivity is likely the chief culprit—compounded by growing consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPFs), creating a perfect storm. The Economic Survey 2024–25 sounds the alarm on UPFs, urging stricter regulation of sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. It recommends mandatory warning labels on food packaging and restrictions on marketing junk food—especially targeting children. It further suggests eliminating such unhealthy options from schools, hospitals, and public spaces—and subsidizing healthier alternatives like millets, fruits, and vegetables. According to a joint report by the World Health Organization (WHO) and India’s Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), the retail sales of India’s ultra-processed food industry grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.37% between 2011 and 2021.
