Financial Highlights According to a quarterly survey jointly conducted by India’s National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE), India’s overall business confidence index reached nearly 150 in the April–June quarter, up from 138 in the previous quarter (January–March 2023–24), indicating robust business sentiment. According to an Indian corporate survey released on July 19, the share of companies expecting overall economic conditions to improve over the next six months rose from 65.8% in Q4 of FY 2023–24 to 71.2% in Q1 of FY 2024–25. Meanwhile, the share of companies anticipating improvement in their own financial position over the next six months increased from 60.6% in Q4 of FY 2023–24 to 67.4%. The proportion of companies viewing the current investment environment as positive stood at 60.4% in Q1 of FY 2024–25, up from 52.2% in Q1 of FY 2023–24. In addition, 97.8% of surveyed companies reported current capacity utilization levels at or above optimal levels in Q1 of FY 2024–25, compared to 95.2% in the previous quarter. The survey also revealed improved confidence in foreign trade (exports of finished goods and imports of raw materials), with a large share of companies expecting both exports and imports to increase. Labor market sentiment also strengthened relative to the previous quarter, with more companies planning to expand hiring. Specifically, 32.3% of companies indicated plans to increase recruitment of managerial or technical staff over the next six months in Q1 of FY 2024–25, up from 30.6% in Q4 of FY 2023–24. Moreover, 37.4% of companies plan to hire more temporary or contract workers over the next six months, compared to 30.5% in Q4 of FY 2023–24. The survey was conducted in June and covered 497 companies across six cities and four regions nationwide, spanning micro, small, medium, and large enterprises. II. Federal Finance Updates 1. As of July 12, India’s foreign exchange reserves rose by USD 9.69 billion to a record high of USD 666.85 billion. 2. RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das stated that coordination and cooperation between India’s fiscal and monetary authorities ensured the rapid post-pandemic recovery of the Indian economy. 3. India aims to become a major player in the green energy sector, targeting 100 GW of electrolyzer capacity by 2030. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy R. K. Data shows that startups (primarily in early- and late-stage rounds) completed 21 funding rounds this week—down from 27 rounds totaling USD 293 million in the same period last year. 5. State-owned BPCL announced on July 19 that its standalone net profit for Q1 ended June 2024 stood at INR 30.15 billion, down 71% year-on-year from INR 105.51 billion. Revenue from operations remained flat at INR 1.28 trillion during the quarter. 6. The Indian government will extend the deadline for disbursing funds under the rural housing scheme, aiming to complete 3.14 million unfinished houses by March 2025. Shockingly, irregularities were uncovered in West Bengal and Odisha, causing delays in project completion.
