What specific emergency measure did Confindustria propose to accelerate Italy's renewable energy rollout?

Confindustria President Emanuele Orsini urged Giorgia Meloni's government to appoint a special commissioner to oversee the permitting process for renewable projects, modeled on the emergency action taken in 2022 to ensure gas supplies; he stated that 'some 4,000 permits for renewable projects amounting to 130 gigawatt must be unblocked... we need a commissioner.'

Why is Italy's slow renewable energy development particularly costly, according to the news?

Italy's slow development of renewables has led to much higher power costs than in most of Europe, a problem exacerbated by recent gas price increases triggered by the Iran war, which highlighted the cost burden on Italian families and firms; gas accounts for almost half of Italy's electricity production—the highest proportion in the EU—compared with around a fifth in Spain and 3% in France.
